I just installed Windows 7, installed the drivers from my Toshiba thread from yesterday, Installed AVG, and have been trying to get all the lasted updates since yesterday. So far I have none. I go to Control Panel and click Windows Update and I was presented with a red X saying

check for updates for your computer
and it sits and sits and sits, I shut down and tried several times. I performed a clean boot and still going on 6 hours with "Checking for updates" and with still nothing installed. even on a clean boot. I have been trying for a total of 12 hours now. All I managed to get is the System Update Readiness Tool installed. but no updates except one that was on the install media from 2010.

Well, if you just reinstalled Windows 7, that means your computer has a TON of updates to install (think every update since Windows 7 came out~about 6 years). And your connection isn't exactly very good (no offence, mine is 6 meg) so that is another factor in your computer taking forever to install updates. When it says it is searching for updates, it is really getting the names of all the updates it needs to install. :)

FWIW:  A few days ago...I installed Win 7 on a system from which I had removed it...there were approximately 150 updates that I had to install plus IE11 before they stopped coming :).  You can avoid some of that by installing SP1 from the desktop (IE 8 installs with just Win 7 sans SP1) and it's probably IE 8 that is your problem.  I suggest downloading/installing IE 11 first (from your desktop), then doing the same for SP1.

It has SP1 already in the disc. But after 7 hours now, it now tells me that there is 0.98GB of updates it is asking me to install. Usually it just starts downloading them one at a time and eventually getting to them all after a few days. I wonder why it is doing it different now, but thanks anyway

Now I am having another problem! It told me that I needed to restart my computer to finish installing updates, but the computer restarted immediately without installing a single update!! and when it restarted, the updates are not there nor are they in the list of installed updates and if I go to Windows Update again, it just sits there "searching for updates" like it did before!!

I did a search for "computer shuts down without installing updates" but no relates results turned. it turned only results regarding how to shut down without installing updates or updates stuck installing every shut down, but nothing as for it not installing anything when it asked me to restart to install them

Hi Sylveon

Is this machine a few years old? Could be a hardware fault if so..

Alternatively, have you run the windows updates component fix it?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

You could also try removing AVG, it's quite a bad AV for free.

Microsoft security essentials would be the only free one I'd recommend you use.

Avast! is also a very good choice from what others have told me.

I ended up getting about half the updates installed but now it hangs after shutdown on about 112 of 247, the entire night. so I hold the power button to shut it off and was presented with a "Windows did not shut down successfully" and an "Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown" and the problem details says "blue screen" but I never saw one, it was showing "installing update 112 of 247" whyen I powered off my machine. after shutting down again. still caught up on Installing update 1 of 125 and same hold power button same did not shut down message same unexpected "hidden" or "silent" blue screen message.

Do you have a valid license to install this version of Win 7 on that system?
