Let's see:  Toshiba Satellite A665-S5170 with upgrades over the years...

1 TB Hard Drive (I think by WD)

                       8 GB RAM

Intel Core i3-380M Processor 2.53 GHz speed

                       Currently running Windows 8 Pro

If you need anything else, please let me know.

This may be long.

I was scanning photos into my compy via a Canon MG-5300 Series Printer (which functions normally & has been used for 2 years now with no incidents) and was working on something handwritten at the same time.  I also had my HTC One M8 phone charging via USB from my compy.  I was 2/3 the way through the stack of photos when I noticed the scanner hadn't scanned.  I looked up and the compy had an error message that the printer was offline.  It wasn't.  So, I restarted.

I always unplug the phone or anything else before I restart, but I forgot this time. The compy took longer than normal to boot up and when it came up, the screen looked as though the resolution was set too low.  I went in to check it and it was where it always was, but the option to change it was gone.  I noticed a lot of options normal in Windows 8.1 Pro (which is what I was running at the time) were not working or faded and unable to be used.  For example, the "power" button used to restart, shut down, or log off, no longer had the log off option.  In looking into the display issue, the Device Manger showed that the Intel HD Graphics Display was no longer working/had failed.  I uninstalled it, rebooted, and tried to install it again via a new download from the Intel website.  The error message stated that there was no compatible hardware for this program. (It was the same thing it had been running before)  I also tried the DVD drive to see if the display was screwing up on that, but it wouldn't play the DVD or any videos I already had on the compy, unless it was something I videoed from my video camera.  At this point, I noticed my compy was moving very fast!  The response time when opening a program or windows was immediate.

I tried going into the Boot Menu just to see if anything was off and the Settings via the F2 and F12 buttons on startup, but it wouldn't go into those menus.

At this point, after a great deal of research and running diagnostics which told me the only issue was with that one display driver, and trying to reinstall it several times, I opted to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium.  (The Windows 8 I have is an upgrade, so I had to go back to the original Windows 7 first).

I wiped and reformatted the hard drive and Installed Windows 7 HP.  A few of the drivers from Toshiba installed and some just would not.  Again, these are the same drivers I used when I had to replace my HD before.  They are directly from the Toshiba website specifically for my make and model laptop.

Due to Windows locking up on me I wiped the drive and reinstalled it 3 times before it finally seemed to work.  I did nothing different any of those times that I can recall.  It just worked this last time.  I downloaded some updates, installed, and upgraded to Windows 8 Pro.  But when I tried to update Windows 8 Pro, it won't update.  And when I tried to "troubleshoot" the troubleshooter locked up on me.  However, the display and the DVD driver are now working properly.

This is a bit beyond my experience.  Everything I'm seeing is saying the HD is going down, but it's relatively new....maybe a year and a half old - 6 months of which it was turned off.

I'm looking to see if anyone has any ideas or knows with any certainty that it could be the hard drive or something else.  I don't want to invest in another hard drive if the computer is pretty much on its last legs, either.  I've had it....maybe 4+ years.

Again, if anyone needs any more info than what I've written down, just let me know!

Thanks!

The first thing to check is if your hard drive is clear of bad sectors. Do you happen to have seen or know how to enter the BIOS menu? It should be function key, Esc or Del key depending on what the early (quick) splash screen would reveal during booting up the laptop. See if you can locate the self hard drive diagnostic of your toshiba laptop if available and run the short test. If pass, proceed to the long test as a confirmation if it truly passed or failed.

I checked the BIOS, but no sign of anything regarding a diagnostic for the hard drive.  I did get a S.M.A.R.T. report, which said "Caution".  As the reallocated sector count was at 8.  I'm really not sure if that's a good or bad amount, but I did save the report if you would like to see it.  I will keep looking for the self HD diagnostic tool.

Okay, I managed the tests!  The new hard drive was a Seagate, so I had to go to the Seagate website to download their version of a hard drive self test.  Everything passed on both the short diagnostic and the long one.  I also downloaded a program from Intel that checked the motherboard and processor.  Both of those, including the graphics passed.

However, I may have a possible cause...could it be simple overheating that's causing these issues?  It really feels like the fan isn't putting out the same amount of air it did!  I'm going to replace that anyway, but do you think it could be the root of the entire set of problems?

The overheating can damage both the hard drive and the motherboard (components) itself.

I would like to see the complete report if possible. There may be other attributes that needed to be checked such as Current Pending Sector Counts and Thermal Event Reports.

Let's see.  I ran the "Seagate Tools" and it said the HD passed the SMART test, but gave me know info.  I tried using the Argus Monitor program and it gave me a readout, which I was unable to copy, but also claimed the HD passed the SMART test.  The final program I ran, CrystalDiskInfo, is the one that has said "Caution" both times it was run.  According to it, the reallocated sector count was at 16 now.

I have since installed Windows 8.1 with no ill effects.  The compy is purring like a kitten at the moment.  Of course, I am cautiously optimistic.  I should be taking this compy apart soon to check the heat sink and make certain there is no visible damage to the motherboard and get the dust out.

Here is CrystalDiskInfo's First scan:

Now, On the Argus Monitoring System, the Current Pending Sector Counts were as follows:
Current:  100; Worst:   100;  Threshold:  0  ;  Flags:  0012; Data:  0:  Status:  OK
And

That leaves the Thermal Event Reports:  I didn't really find that listed, are you referring to the temp that the cpu/gpu, etc. hits?  Let me know.  Thanks!

The hard drive test would give a pass result as expected since the remapping of faulty sectors is successfully resolved and at the same time no uncorrectable and current pending sector is being reported. The caution or warning refers to the reallocated sectors which could likely be detrimental to your system performance and much more the allocated value could continue to increase which may need monitoring. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

are you referring to the temp that the cpu/gpu, etc. hits?

That would be part of the 1st to-do list since you've experienced failing drives already. Frequent unwanted shutdowns/crashes and thermal events are just one of the natural causes for HDD.
