Hi seem something got into my computer!!!

Noticed yesterday my Norton’s popup said it caused an error and had to close. I rebooted the computer and ran a scan, came up fine? I notice my pointer would blink back and forth to the hourglass. I opened my task manager and it seems to be switching with the CSRSS.EXE & N360.EXE (CPU) counter jumping up and down, FAST! Never saw anything like it before, usually what just system idle, maybe Firefox??? I tried running Norton's again, I really forget if it crashed or didn't do anything. Tried the standard online virus scans and ran into all kinds of troubles. Some seem to start to load and then the popup window disappeared? Think it was Kasp., when I reloaded it, it ran and found nothing! Others froze or crashed, restarted the computer, without finishing. It seems to have gotten worse, the last few time I looked at the Task Manager and I see

CSRSS.exe       KSS.EXE       N360.EXE       AVG***.exe

All these (CPU) counts are jumping up and down I have never seen my task manager list jumping so much! It seems so much worse now that I tried all these scans, even with the computer freezing and crashing now. I rebooted in safe mode and came right here. You help me once so long ago and hope you can again! One thing, now when I look at the Task Manager, all those virus program names are gone, list is very short.  Plus (CPU) counts are normal, though that CSRSS.EXE is still there and its count does change from 00 to 02, 03 a couple of times, in a few minutes. So much calmer, nothing like when I was booting in regular mode.

So I’m just leaving my computer here in safe mode until I hear back from you. Thanks in advance for all than you do. Oh yea, I am running a old AMD XP2800+, with windows XP sp3, don’t laugh :) !!!

Richie

ps.

also, ESET crashed and just wondering if I should stay in safe mode, or reboot regular???

Just tried to download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, got application failed to initialize properly (0xc000001d). Click on ok to terminate the application.

Are you really surprised? You have kaspersky, norton, and AVG installed. There I was thinking that I like a bit of tin foil head gear. The executable CSRSS.exe as you typed it has reputation for being exploited, and although it should be a legit bit of XP, it could also be a trojan according to some of the webz? This support article from Micro$oft may be more practical/applicable use to you, and they suggest that it's caused by a corrupt user profile. The suggested remedy is to delete your user account after backing up stuff, and then restart followed by re-creating your user account.

PS

Being a Linux user I'd have to chip in as to why don't you try a linux live DVD/USB, there is no need to make changes to your hard drive or computer with the possible exception of changing the BIOS boot order. If you cannot afford a hardware/software upgrade then just boot into free linux, and try it out. There is no obligation to buy, and little/no risk of damage. Visit the BC linux forums, where people are very friendly and helpful.

Are you really surprised? You have kaspersky, norton, and AVG installed.

I don't believe you read my post correctly. As the problem existed prior to me trying a bunch of online scans, before I came here. The first sign of trouble was the Norton's popup saying it had to close. Then I noticed my pointer kept switching back and forth between the arrow and hourglass. That was when I looked at the Task Manager and saw both the CSRSS.EXE & N360.EXE (CPU) count continually jumping up and down! That's when I tried to run my Comcast installed Notorn's, with no avail and that is when I checked out the old standard online scans! Which all seem to freeze or restart the computer. Again even in safe mode, as none of the virus programs loaded, I still am unable to run any of them to completion. Thanks for reading my post and I did check out the MS link. But the issue addressed is,

"Csrss.exe uses 100% of the CPU When you Right-Click an item in Windows Explorer or on the desktop"

That is not my issue.

Hi FireHouse,

Thanks for your quick response, I do appreciate it. My buddy says, it's time to upgrade! The truth is I really don't have the money to and for what I use the computer for, I get by. I did notice before, I had to revert to older version of adobe or was t Java? It did have to do with my old XP, :(

So anyways, here is the return from the MiniToolBox run...

Hi RikCab,

Where do we start, Csrss.exe is a vital systems level process :

This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem; Win32.sys is the kernel-mode portion. Csrss stands for Client/Server Run-Time Subsystem, and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and implementing some portions of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.

Hence it should never go away, it can also be a trojan if it's not in your system32 folder (C:\windows\system32 or similar) so check the location of the executable Csrss that appears on your system. If memory serves me correctly 'safe-mode' is XP without advanced features and reduced drivers (notably video: old school display), it also can be networking enabled or disabled. Which works for you, have you tried both and compared. If networking appears to be problematic, then firehouse' suggestions to flush dns cache etc. should have rectified it. Interestingly you mentioned "I opened my task manager and it seems to be switching with the CSRSS.EXE & N360.EXE (CPU) counter jumping up and down", which would indicate the client server run-time subsystem and Norton 360 could be conflicting. I've seen posts that suggest downgrading Norton 360 can cure some issues similar to yours.

Another quote sorry "the last few time I looked at the Task Manager and I see CSRSS.exe, KSS.EXE, N360.EXE, AVG***.exe All these (CPU) counts are jumping up and down", now these are all bar one security related products, and they were all possibly engaged in race conditions for your (admitted by yourself) limited resources, clock cycles, threads, etc...

Your registry seems to have a lot of AV keys:

- That's another web based malware scanner yes?

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware version 2.1.8.1057 (HKLM\...\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware_is1) (Version: 2.1.8.1057 - Malwarebytes Corporation)

- and another

Norton Security Suite (HKLM\...\N360) (Version: 21.7.0.11 - Symantec Corporation)

Have you tried cleaning your registry of dangling references?

Have you considered that you have too many security products installed, and it may be time to rationalize, I say that because a lot of these softwarez will start processes on boot, and they're essentially tring to achieve the same objective albeit with varying degrees of success.

BleepingComputer does not support registry cleaners (digital snake oil). Only experts needs to know what to do .

FireHouse,

Got rid of the extras, That I only installed after the problem started! That's for others that may have missed me saying that before. But installing and not removing each one as I tried another did seem to cause more problems. So now, all those programs are removed. Though the only one that was on the system prior to all this, was the Norton PC Checkup. But even that has been on my system forever.

So as my system rebooted, with programs removed, everything seems fine??? There is no crazy (CPU) count movement on Task Manager and the pointer is not blinking back and forth, hourglass??? So for the heck of it I ran my Norton scan, got over 140k files and I came back, with the closed popup, without completing.

One other thing I forgot to note, was when I first had the Norton close popup, I also tried the Restore points that I had saved. They would not load any of them at the time. That was when I went online to try the free online scans. So right now everything looks fine, but as I said, the only thing that has changed from before was the removal of the Norton PC Checkup??? And the fact that  Norton's does complete, and I haven't even tried a Restore Point???

So here is my new MiniToolBox file…

Ok, let's do final checks so let's make sure that system is 100% clean .

Scan with Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Download Malwarebytes and install it on your system (Run setup as Administrator).

At the end of installation, uncheck "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Premium", then click Finish.

Make sure you have latest definitions by clicking on Update Now,then under Scan choose Threat Scan.

After scanning is done, click on Remove if malware is found, tool will ask for restart , allow it to do so.

Attach MBAM log here (you can find it in History > Application Logs).

Ok, let's do final checks so let's make sure that system is 100% clean .

Scan with Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Clicked on your link, to me to the download page. Clicked on the Bleeping link and downloaded. Update said, newer version available and reloaded. Finished and unclicked "free trial" and finished. Then got the dreaded popup!!!

mbam.exe     Application Error

X    The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000001d). Click on ok to terminate the application.

I also noticed, that on my last posted MiniToolBox shows AVG PC TuneUp 2015...  But my control panel doesn't show any AVG programs since I removed them, a few minutes back???

thank you

moused over the mbam.exe file in my download folder, reads...

and  yes, that    AVG PC TuneUp 2015...   still shows on the MiniToolBox Log.  But it does not show up on my add/remove program list.

on the Bleeping download page it shows two possible downloads, I'd tried both. Clicking on both link, the updating bar finished, it said a newer version was available, and started its update on its own. Once done, failure popup.  :(

I cleaned out everything I could see and erased my Nortons. I tired loading AVG, Norton, and McAfee, every time I run a scan, it never finishes and reboots!

But the blinking/hourglass pointer stopped blinking back and forth! And right now I have installed the free McAfee. But is it working??? I know I am unable to run any scans???
