Hi, I was looking through my update history and I noticed this:

I no longer get the option to download or install it even when I do a manual check for updates.  How can I go about fixing this?

On the other hand, how important is this really?  I have Avast! as my antivirus, is Windows Defender that critical to keep updated?

Thanks.

Hi windows8newb :)

Even if avast! is your Antivirus, you can also use Windows Defender to scan your system, so it would be a good idea to keep it's definitions updated. Follow the instructions below please.

EndqYRa.pngSystem File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

There is no need to took extra load for update latest version of windows defender. when new update avaiable it will be update.  i think you need to change your setting to windows update manually to automatic

There's no need to do that. Even if his Windows Update is configured to "Manual", that update should still install correctly.

Thank you for the reply. I will do this after work today.

Updates are set to automatic, but I still check manually most days to be sure.

File attached.

I also have noticed that it seems my computer takes longer to boot up and "settle down" than normal, with the fan whirring for quite a while.  In the Task Manager I see some processes:  QueryAppBlock.exe, wsappx, rundll32.exe, wicainventory.exe., ntoskrnl.exe (only taking up like 1% of disk), and especially TiWorker.exe (like 50% of disk).  I have checked and as far as I can tell all these processes are in their correct folders and seem clean, so I do not think it is malware, I think it is related to Windows Updates.  My computer kept trying and failing to update to Windows 10 until I uninstalled update kb3035583, but I wonder if there are parts of it left and it's still trying.  Avast! also seems to be taking up resources, with aswFe.exe and mtfutil.exe, to the point that Firefox crashed at one point because Avast! was using so many processes.

I think I have done this correctly, here is the link to my cbs.txt scannow file:

Ok, it is running so I am posting from my iPhone. It states that it will take 20 minutes "due to the nature of your corruptions", which is ominous sounding.

I can't seem to download that... the Download button is greyed out.  Furthermore it seems to say that the file is 7 hours old.

I don't have a Dropbox account, is this the cause of the problem?

Thank you for your help so far!  Much appreciated.

You need a Dropbox account to download files from Dropbox, yes. And I know it's 7 hours old, but it's the right file. I know it because it's from my Dropbox :P

You did well :) However, if I'm the one posting the instructions directly to you, then it means that you can use this fix. If you take a look at my signature you may understand why :P
