I have an old AutoRoute on my desk computer and I would like to put Microsoft AutoRoute 2015 for a 64 bit computer on my Laptop Computer before Microsoft dump it. However, whatever title I key in all sorts of offers come up which appear to offer me obligatory additional software that I don't want. Could someone please let me know what I should key in to get genuine Microsoft software so that I don't get mugged by software that I don't need. Of course, it is possible that there is a better mapping package and if so I would welcome a look at it.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, MS stopped producing new editions after the 2006 one, there may have been a 2007 edition. I too have looked for an updated version and never found one, in fact there was a discussion thread here on the subject about a year ago and that was the conclusion we came to as I recall.

The reason was that in the face of free on-line mapping services like Google Maps and MS's then forthcoming Bing mapping it was no longer viable as a commercial product. So, unless you want to spend big bucks on specialised commercial mapping that is what you are now stuck with.

Many thanks for that, however, the following question will expose my lack of knowledge.  Is it possible to download the Google Maps onto a Laptop so that they are their permanently?

Hi Balliol,

If you have Windows 8.1, you can download HERE maps from : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/here-maps/9wzdncrfhwjq

If you have Windows 10, HERE is re-bundled by Microsoft into an app called Maps.

You can use both in Offline Mode (You can download specific regions,) and can set the downloaded maps to update automatically (when connected to the internet, and if there have been updates).

Here is developed by Nokia, since their acquisition of NAVTEQ, the popular service provider for a variety of GPS devices. So, it's a pretty reliable mapping service.

On Windows 7 and older, you might want to try GMapCatcher from the following site : https://code.google.com/p/gmapcatcher/

GMapCatcher, basically caches map data from sources you decide - Bing, Nokia, etc., however you will not be able to download google maps.

Hope this information helps!
