Hi,

Over the past two weeks I've been struggling to find a way to get rid of the above two problems. I think they both stem from my dad clicking on pop-ups with 'Install' buttons when he saw an alert come up whilst using internet explorer.

I've read through the different guides on the site, and downloaded all the programmes mentioned and gone through all the steps, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Every time I boot up, the first thing that pops up on screen is the Dialup box - this is before I've clicked on Internet Explorer. There's also an icon in the taskbar which looks like a round white ball, surrounded by an orange ring. I've tried to right-click it to remove it, but just opens a SysProtect Installer window.

Also, I get WinAntivirus ads popping up when I use IE. They start off with warning pop-ups about registry problems, and then closing them down results in more ads until a download box appears. I click on "Close" for all of these windows.

Please can someone help me out with this, as I don't know what else to do to get rid of the problem.

Thanks very much,

Chris.

PS. I'm not sure if this is related, by I had to disable the DrWatson function on Internet Explorer as when I tried to open up IE I wouldn't get a DialUp prompt. I'm not sure if this has affected anything?

Here's my HiJackThis Log:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: If Vundofix never re-opens, please try running vundofix again, but without the check next to "Run VundoFix as a task."

Because some malware is hiding from Hijackthis, before posting a new hijackthis log, please rename Hijackthis to HJT and then post a new hijackthis log.

Hi,

I downloaded Vundo and followed the steps you described.

However, when I ticked the 'Run VundoFix as a task' option, it didn't re-open. I followed the other instructions and clicked on the Scan for Vundo button - this brought up a message saying "done searching for files. No infected files were found". I clicked on remove Vundo and it showed a message saying "No files were found, Vundofix 5.1.4 will now close".

Here's the text from the D: drive (my C drive is used by Mirror Disk to back up vital files).

VundoFix V5.1.4

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.7

Scan started at 22:25:07 20/07/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

ok...what about these instructions:

Because some malware is hiding from Hijackthis, before posting a new hijackthis log, please rename Hijackthis to HJT and then post a new hijackthis log.

Ok, we're going to try vundofix again, but with a slight twist

Open Vundofix:* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

o D:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqr.dll
o D:\WINDOWS\system32\rqstv.*

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: If Vundofix never re-opens, please try running vundofix again, but without the check next to "Run VundoFix as a task."

Hi,

That's finally stopped the SysProtect internet connection box popping up after I boot up each time! Thank you!

The USYP_0001_N85M2606NetInstaller.exe program wasn't in the location that you suggested. There was an icon on my desktop called Install SysProtect though, which I deleted.

I tried searching for the file through the C: and D: drives, but nothing came back for it.

The PC certainly seems to be running a little quicker on boot-up, but I can't be sure if the Win32: FakeAlerts problem is still there because it's pretty intermittent. I keep thinking everything's fine and then it crops up again.

Also, it seems to take a bit longer than I remember to start up Internet Explorer. Although that might just be my imagination...

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
