Hi, I have a Win 7 Home Edition 32bit o/s on a Toshiba Satellite and cannot connect to the internet via wireless or ethernet.

I have flushed the DNS, renewed it and tried nearly every trick in the book to pick up the ip from my router which has several devices connected and are able to connect without a problem, but not this laptop. It was able to connect a couple of weeks ago at a friends via wireless though. I am stumped.

I ran a not up to date virus data from Avast through system and it picked up a lot of adware and malware, all under quarantine now, but it would not run the malwarebytes because I cannot update the data. I even tried the cameleon version, no go because I am not connected.

I have a netgear router, I prefer not to fuss with that as all my other devices are able to connect, but this laptop. The router has given it an ip 169.254.... type address with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0

Much appreciated of the help with this matter.

Thanking anyone now if they can have the time to help me  :)

Best Regards.

G'day DarkAngel5, and Welcome to BC

Try re enabling your connection  with this :

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR.....If you are using Windows 7..
Download  Click Me
then...Right click on winsockfix.bat    and then click on Run As Administrator

Hi Condobloke thank you for the quick reply!

Ok, I have tried the proxy too and no, I haven't got that enabled. I checked the registry, in the tcpip parameters I had the 0.0.0.0 for the DHCP.....

I will try the link on my XP, transfer the winsock to the Win 7 and see if that will "fire" the connections between the machine and the router....

Hi Condoblock,
No luck....it didn't work.

I came on and flashed really quick and than nothing. I restarted the system and I still have the exclaimation mark starring back at me :(

It says no network access Unidentified network. I checked the ip, it still says 169.254.... and subnet mask still the same.

Hi Condobloke! Thought I best to let you know the laptop is well now! I ran the Adwcleaner and there were lots of adware and so forth....but internet stayed inert till I succumbed to a system restore late last night, after many nights of wrecking my brain with all sorts of disinfection apps and scouring the internet on my machine for a solution. Finally connection fired to life! I'm not very sure what killed the connection, but system looks clean now after hours of disinfection. Going through one last sweep with Eset scanner..... Thank you for your help and quietman7's post. Cheers!
