So, my friend was having trouble backing up his computer to his external harddrive, which he says he's done before but now it's not working and asked me to take a look at it, so I tried to do a backup and it said something about "configuration registry backup is corrupt" and gave me a 0x800703f1 error code. So after searching around I saw that I should do an sfc /scannow in an elevated cmd, so I did, and I got the log files on the desktop and looked through and found the ones in question. I've done a lot of poking around and can't figure out how to fix it. Here are the parts of the log file showing errors. I'll attach the whole thing just in case. Oh yea, it's windows 7 64 bit.

Now, I'm going to be out of town this weekend and this is a friend's computer. I just figured I'd go ahead and post this here now and when I get back on Sunday or Monday I'll see what's been suggested here and get back on it.

From what I can tell the error code 0x800703f1 refers to problems in the registry.  If that is the case it can be best just to factory default the machine, and inform your friend not to use any sort of registry cleaner. You can also try a repair on startup, but that is likely to fail in resolving this particular issue. A system restore from safe mode may also yield results.

As for the hash mismatch, I cannot tell if it is a file that is corrupted itself and is producing the mismatch, or if it is a registry problem.  Either way it can prevent a good backup, and destroy a recovery. Other more skilled techs might be able to sort that out better than I.

In general though I prefer not to use Windows' backup functions and instead use third party software.  This is personal preference from past experiences of the negative sort, and other techs would argue with me (largely based on the CORRECT notion that installing more software for a function that is included does not make sense in most cases)

Well, yesterday he brought it by and wanted me to look at it, but he'd forgotten his external hard drive so I couldn't try to back it up to see what it was saying, so we just chilled for a little while and he said he'd come by tomorrow (today). I did however go ahead and run CCleaner yesterday , which got rid of like a GB of crap and then I ran the registry cleaner that's built in to CCleaner. CCleaner does give you the option to backup the registry before it does its thing and I always do that, so I should be able to restore the registry to what it was yesterday if it's a problem. However, he was having this problem before I did that so I don't feel like that's it.

I use a 3rd party application myself that automatically backs things up, just because it came with the external drive that I got, but apparently this is the way he's been doing it and if the built in function is fine with him I didn't want to go recommending something else - especially since I've only ever used the one I have and don't know what the best thing to recommend would be.

utc.app.json and telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json that are showing up in the sfc /scannow log is the result of a problematic update from Microsoft.  This is the KB3022345 update.

Go to thetechcookbook and follow the instructions there to resolve this issue.  It is important that you download the two files to your desktop as one of these needs to be dragged over and dropped on the other.

I'm back, so I'm sure I'll a hold of that computer again soon and try it out. I saw that the other day when i was searching around, but I thought it was something different because my sfc log said "This component was referenced by [l:162{81}]"Package_250_for_KB3068708" instead of "This component was referenced by [l:162{81}]”Package_250_for_KB3022345"

Should that script work in my case as well?
