When I try to run Combofix (latest version from the web site) on my desktop, I get an error message that says "combofix only works on Windows 7, etc.," and quits.  I tried to run it on a different machine this morning and saw the same error.  Yet I've run it on other Windows 8.1 machines without getting the notice.

Any idea what triggers the notice?  Thanks.

Chances that the other machines you mentioned are Windows 8, not 8.1. ComboFix can run on 8, but it does not support 8.1.

Also, please do not try to run ComboFix on your own. If you need help with malware removal, please post in one of the two appropriate forums.

Thanks for the quick responses.  My guess is that I ran it on a machine that had Windows 8 on it because I know it worked.  Makes sense now.  Thanks.

If you need individual assistance with a malware infection, other advanced tools are available but they cannot be used in this forum. You would need to follow the instructions in the Preparation Guide For Requesting Help starting at Step 6.
  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that post your logs in the in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here for assistance by the Malware Response Team Experts.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.

If you choose to follow the above instructions and post a FRST log, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can closed this one. If not, at least you know doing that is an option available to you.

Consider me warned in the usage of Combofix, however I'm curious if the sUBS folks have any intention of making a version of Combofix that will support Windows 8.1 and now the newer Windows 10?

sUBs, the creator of ComboFix, works alone...most of his current efforts and resources are devoted to answering questions, investigating issues, providing support for the current version of his tool and working as a Research Engineer for Malwarebytes.

At this point ComboFix most likely never will be updated to support Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 since there are other alternatives (such as FRST, Zoek) which are being used by malware removal experts.
