Corrupt Firefox in Win 8.1 and no Chrome

Greetings everyone.

 

Well, I'm helping a friend clean up a laptop and I feel like I'm about 80% of the way but, boy howdy, the last 20% has been a doozy.

 

Here are the particulars and what I've done.

 

Laptop is a Gateway NE56R34u running Windows 8.1  64 bit.

 

 

When I first got it, I could barely log on, CPU was pegged at about 98% and, as you might guess, lots and lots of pop-ups of the usual kind (Optimizer Pro, SpeedUp My PC, etc.).

 

I was able to Boot into Safe Mode with Networking, and do some of the basic house cleaning as well as following this guide to remove the obnoxious www-searching (dot com) redirect in Firefox. Even though that guide didn't fix the problem, I was able to finally tackle it by going through and running the laundry list below:

 

  • MBAM
  • Full Scan with Windows Defender (w/ updated definitions)
  • Full online scan with Eset Online Scanner
  • HitMan Pro (downloaded from here)
  • AdwCleaner
  • JRT (downloaded from here)
  • Autoruns (just looking for anything pesky, which I didn't find)

 

and finally the machine is humming along again.

 

Boot time is okay for what the machine is, I've run and re-run Full Scans on almost everything listed above and everything is finally coming up clean, all Windows Updates installed, etc.

 

However, there are a couple of issues remaining that I can't seem to resolve and Lord knows I've searched all the corners of the Internet for them.

 

 

First issue: the only browser that is working is IE, which works fine without any redirects but I can't download Chrome. I can get to the page but when I select "Download" button, nothing happens for a moment and then I get sent to the "thanks for downloading" page.

 

I can download everything else. The entire list above was downloaded with IE and everything went straight to my Downloads Folder without any issues.

 

 

 

Second issue is with Firefox, which will not play nice & appears to still be corrupted and continues with a ton of redirects, esp. when I'm trying to download Chrome - you should see the page it sends me to, designed to look "just like Google Chrome".

 

I did try to Refresh Firefox but that didn't work.

 

I uninstalled it, ran Full Scans with Defender and MBAM, then reinstalled it but nope, still again with the redirects and extra tabs opening and the cute but nefarious Chat Window that opens up in the corner and offers me, "instant computer help" if I just click >here<

 

 

One of the last things I could see before I thought I had this under control was the Rocket Ads in Firefox. I could not get this thing to go away.

 

So there you go.

 

I don't have an emergency but dang, I can't figure out how to get these last two issues addressed.

 

Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? Super great script that I can run and refresh?

           UPDATE

 

So, I kept searching and searching for an answer as to why Google Chrome would not install and I found a couple of possible answers at the Google Forums regarding searching for certain keys in the Registry, which I did and then deleting them.

    Please keep in mind, deleting/modifying keys in the Registry can very dangerous to do, so only do so after you have backed up the registry. And know that even then, it can cause some serious damage to your computer.

After I found the pesky entry and deleted it, Chrome installed without any issues at all!  :guitar: I test drove the browser, installed AdBlock, ran Google's Software Removal Tool (which did not find anything) and reset everything. Surfed some more - have no redirects and no adware or other pesky creatures,

 

 

 

Next Question:

 

So, I still have not tried reinstalling Firefox yet but I'm wondering, based on the above actions that helped me fix the Google Chrome issue, is it wise to go ahead and try to do a Deep Clean of all of the associated keys to Firefox and then try to reinstall?

 

Is there a preferred way to do this - key by key, or is there an app that can safely remove all traces? (Revo UnInstaller Pro?)

        [ Another Update ]

 

 

Okay, so while I don't recommend this, I was *finally* able to uninstall and re-install Firefox and remove the last of the Rocket Ads and all the other cr*p that kept causing redirects and the pesky pop-up window(s) offering me instant computer help with a Computer Technician - which was usually represented by a cute brunette.

 

I have nothing against cute brunettes - heck, I'm married to one - but I've learned enough here at Bleeping to know not to click on that pop-up.  :lol:

 

All of this was taking place in my Firefox browser after my attempted clean up from a ton of cr*pware and adware, esp. the super tenacious www-searching (dot com) home page hijack.

 

 

 

Even after running the laundry list of great tools listed in the OP and graciously provided by Bleeping Computer and also following this How-To-Remove guide for this pesky browser hijacker, I could not get Chrome to download/install and, as previously mentioned, Firefox continued with the Rockets Ads and/or some pesky pop-ups. I tried the Refesh Firefox option a couple of times - in Safe Mode as well - and tried uninstalling, re-installing, over and over.

 

 

          ***  It wasn't until I drilled down to the Registry and deleted the Firefox entry that I was able to install Firefox and it ran without incident.  ***

 

 

Now keep in mind, if you haven't done this before and you're not sure how to do so, I strongly suggest you do not do this, as you can do some serious damage to your computer. There are plenty of amazing people here at Bleeping that can walk you through getting your machine clean safely, it just take a little patience and persistence.

 

 

So there you go.

 

All's well that ends well. I can't say I'm smarter now that this is all over, but, as one of my favorite podcasts says, I feel a little less dumb.

 

 

Now if I can just get that other pesky HP Envy to stop giving me that dumb-looking Windows 8 BSOD, but that's for another post....

Tweaking.com - Windows Repair All-In-One (Portable)

- Download Windows Repair All-In-One (Portable Version) from here.

- Extract tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to your Desktop.

- Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.
- Right click on QfBzvq1.png and select Run as Administrator (XP users just double click) to start Windows Repair All-In-One.
(Windows Vista/7/8 users: Accept UAC warning if it is enabled.)

- A window will appear. Click Step 2.

- Click the Open Pre-Scan button, then click Start Scan. Wait for Windows Repair to finish scanning.

- Depending on which error Windows Repair found, click Repair Reparse Point or Repair Environment Variable accordingly. When the button changes to "Done!", click the close button to return to Windows Repair.

- Go to Step 3, then click Check in the See If Check Disk Is Needed.

- If Windows Repair stated that errors are found, click Open Check Disk At Next Boot. Choose (/R) Fixes errors on the disk also locate bad sectors and recovers readable information, then click Add To Next Boot. Reboot the computer to let Windows check the disk.

- Go to Repairs and click Open Repairs. Leave all checkmarks as they are, then click Start Repairs.

I'm on the Start Repairs right now. Home stretch.

 

 

The Check Disk Reboot took a long time, but if there's one (of many) thing I've learned here at BC, it's to sit on your hands when the Check Disk is running.

 

 

Your instructions did not make mention of running all these in Safe Mode so I didn't really snap to that until I got to the:

 

 

  •                        Go to Repairs and click Open Repairs. Leave all checkmarks as they are, then click Start Repairs.

 

 

which is what I'm doing now, and I went ahead and booted into Safe Mode without Networking (which is what they recommended) but once the app popped up, I noticed that it stated, "Safe Mode with Networking" is recommended.  :lol:

 

I'll rerun this whole set in Safe Mode (with or without Networking) if you'd like me to.

 

Right now the desktop is flashing all sorts of cmd windows and it works it's way through 33 of 37 repairs. Lots of excitement here in the Winterland household.

 

Updates and, hopefully, a log real soon.

I keep getting hung up when posting the Repair_WMI log contents.

 

 

Not sure what to do. I've tried logging in and out of Bleeping, restarted my machine and still no joy.

 

Ideas?

Hey there boopme, my friend wants her machine back & I'm inclined to give it to her.

 

It's running like a champ and unless you see something drastic that needs tending to in the logs that I was able to post, I'll consider this problem solved.

 

 

Major thanks to you and all the other great people here at Bleeping Computer.

 

Two years ago I would not have had a clue how to even begin fixing a machine like this. I've still got a lot to learn but I've got the backup and resources of Bleeping Computer, so I think I'll be okay.
