Hi all,

We have to reinstall Windows 8.1 several times a week, and on older PC's we find ourselves installing Win8 (original version), then doing tons of updates before getting to the stage where we can download and install Windows 8.1.  We have tried using the 8.1 disk, however it doesn't pickup the Win 8 licence number embedded in the laptop or rejects the the original Win8 OEM licence number.

This is costing us loads of time and downloads.

Does anyone know a work-around for this?

Regards

Richard

Hi Richard :)

I guess this article on HowToGeek should help you with your issue.

http://www.howtogeek.com/187525/how-to-perform-a-clean-install-of-windows-8.1-with-a-windows-8-key/

You would have to test it on one or two computers however to see if it works for you.

Unfortunately, my main issue is how to install it without the licence number as its often embedded in the BIOS - I think the only solution is to install 7 and run latest licence finder to get the licence number and hen use this other workaround - thanks for the quick reply!

Well... What if you launch the installation via a USB, but also add a ProduKey by NirSoft on it, then during the installation, bring up the command prompt, and launch it from the USB? It's a standalone executable so it might just work. This way you grab the key during the installation (right before). Just an idea thought, never tested it.
