when clicking on some urls on webpages and sometimes when i right click firefox in the taskbar and click firefox... this gave the https://rover.ebay.com/ar/ (etc etc) error - see attached .png for total url. the white page displays a lot of jibberish characters and some of my location info. this page opened in kaspersky internet security safe browser - green border.

i do not know if this is connected but my virgin media mail - which uses google mail thinks i am a robot as of recently.

today i actually used AdwCleaner.exe downloaded from your site before i ran Farbar.. it found two entries that it removed one was a download manager.. i rebooted dont know where the log went now.. after reboot i ran it again and if i click on tools - quarantine manager.. it shows ...path.../user.js is in there.

here is the farbar scan results FRST.txt...

Hi and welcome to the Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum,

I am thcbytes and I am here to help you!

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please perform all steps in the order received and do not proceed if you need clarification.

Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems please stop and tell me about it. When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide you with detailed suggestions for prevention.

one thing i need to tell you that happened last night... i got a pop up notification bottom right of the screen from an icon that told me kaspersky internet security was turned off and to enable it.. even though it was enabled and reporting itself as working correctly. i ctrl + alt + del to open task manager, clicked show processes from all users and both avp.exe and avpul.exe - the kaspersky processes were running still. i clicked to enable kaspersky in the notification and nothing happened, i guess because it was already running. i have had this problem maybe up to 10 times before where kaspersky is said to not be running.

ok i tried to do the first step...
i paused kaspersky internet security
i clicked on the link in your forum post http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/smeenk/zoek.exe
but got this message...

The connection has timed out

The server at download.bleepingcomputer.com is taking too long to respond.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

...i re-enabled kaspersky, then clicked the download link... got the same above message in firefox.

stopping here, waiting for your response as requested.

Hello,

The Zoek link is back up and active again. Please follow the instructions from the beginning including Zoek and let me know if you experience any issues.

one thing i need to tell you that happened last night... i got a pop up notification bottom right of the screen from an icon that told me kaspersky internet security was turned off and to enable it.. even though it was enabled and reporting itself as working correctly. i ctrl + alt + del to open task manager, clicked show processes from all users and both avp.exe and avpul.exe - the kaspersky processes were running still. i clicked to enable kaspersky in the notification and nothing happened, i guess because it was already running

Might be a rogue pop-up.  If you could gather a screen shot and post it here of the warning if it happens again that would be helpful.  Rest assured I will do everything I can to help.

ok i did the first step but i may have done it wrong?.. this is what i did.. i downloaded zoek from your link in firefox, opened the containing folder, dragged zoek.exe to my desktop.. right clicked zoek.exe then clicked "run as administrator".. well nothing happened for a number of seconds so i thought i needed to double click zoek.exe to make it run now, which i did... well zoek opened and only one window.. thus i do not know if it was run with admistrator or not. but i am on the "ME" account which is the sole administrator account for my laptop.

ok i am on this step...

  • Please review this information to understand what resetting Firefox will do
  • Click on the Menu button (3 horizontal bars in the top right corner of window)
  • Click the Help button (question mark - ?)

...i found and clicked the 3 horizontal bars but there is no help / question mark - ? ... in the menu. stopping and waiting for your instruction.

also from reading what resetting firefox will do i guess i will need to reinstall kaspersky internet security at some point afterwards since its extensions will get removed. i really need to reinstall anyway because the extensions hardly ever work.. and i mean the gkaspersky green tick? next to the url in google search to say its a safe site.. etc.

Your doing good.  It is going to require many steps to resolve the problem so stick with it.  We will get it resolved.  Will address the Kas AV issues.  I appreciate the screen capture.

Unfortunatelty you will need to reset FF after we re-install it.

For Firefox do this...

Uninstall:

Note: Revo Uninstaller is more thorough in deleting programs on your computer than using the Add/Remove option in Windows. Since it is a more powerful tool, please be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
Note: If the program you want to uninstall is not listed by Revo, let me know and we will try an altenate method of removal.

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
note: there is no need to click anything on that page, the download will start automatically
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it
  • From the list of programs double click on the listed program(s), or anything similar, to remove it:
Mozilla Firefox
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • When the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next
  • Check the items in bold only on the list then click Delete
note: you may have to expand some folders by clicking the "+" mark
  • When prompted click on Yes and then on Next
  • Put a check on any folders that are found and select Delete
  • When prompted select Yes then Next
  • Once done click Finish
  • Next check and see if these folders remain....
    1. Click the Windows Start button on your computer
    2. Type %APPDATA% in the search field and press enter to open the hidden Roaming folder.
    3. Open the Mozilla folder.
    4. Delete the Firefox folder.
    5. Navigate here, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox, and be sure this folder is deleted if it still exists

<<<<<<<<<<

Re-boot

<<<<<<<<<<

Reinstall Firefox

<<<<<<<<<

Reboot

<<<<<<<<<

  • Launch Internet Explorer
  • Select Tools, Internet Options, and then the General tab
  • Under Browsing history check only the following

Preserve Favorites website data
Temporary Internet files and website files
Coolies and website data
History

  • Click Delete...
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Under Reset Internet Explorer settings Click Reset...
  • On the warning page click Reset again
  • Click Close, then OK
  • Restart Internet Explorer
