I'm running a Gateway DX4720-03 (manual: https://www.manualowl.com/m/Gateway%20Computers/DX4720/Manual/148002) with Windows 7 HP 64-bit and have a Nvidia GeForce 7100/nForce 630i card and a Linksys WRT 320N router.  My problem is that I always thought that this desktop computer was wirelessly connected to the internet, but I just found out that it was connected via an ethernet cable. At the moment everything is working just fine (portable computer wirelessly synched with desktop, guests can easily access my wifi, no problems with the internet, etc), except when I try to set up my wifi camera as an access point and have the computer recognize it.  It was at this point, after much, much research and fiddling, I discovered that my network was set up as a Local Area Connection using an ethernet cable. In fact, the router was never listed in Network (under Network Infrastructure) until I just now selected "Add a wireless device."  But, when going to Device Manager, Network adapters has MS Teredo Tunneling Adapter and NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet and under Network Infrastructure Devices there is MS Wireless Router Module...the Linksys router doesn't show up here even though I just added it.  From all this manipulation, it should be  obvious that although I can very handily tweak my browser (Firefox), maintain a clean computer, solve various computer related problems - with help from the various forums, I am truly at a loss when it comes to networking and wireless set up.

So, what I need to do is get my computer to work wirelessly (and to recognize other access points) without disrupting an apparently well working computer.  My gut tells me that I have to disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer in order for the router to be recognized.  But, I have disabled the NVIDIA ethernet connection in the Device Manager and there was no sign that a wifi hookup was available in the system tray icon. Furthermore, if this is correct, will the computer then automatically recognize my router and other access points that are close by in the neighborhood...or must I do more to make this connection work?  I ask this last question because I have disabled the NVIDIA ethernet connection in the Device Manager (right click, Disable) and there was no sign that a wifi hookup was available in the system tray icon. Also, with the ethernet disabled, I went to "Set up a connection or network">"Set up a new netwrok" and nothing came into the "Choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure" field.

Hey Flycaster,

So this post probably need to be moved to the networking forums.  Also make sure to include what kind of wireless camera you are using.  Ideally you should be able to keep your desktop wired, which is optimal.  Also not seeing your router on your networking tab really isn't a big deal at all.  If you are on the internet you are on the router and using it.

Yeah, maybe I should just remove the post.  Panasnic FZ1000 has wireless capabilities. Don't really understand this stuff as i believe that being on the ethernet cable, one is not using wireless; although I'm on the net.

I would copy and paste this into the other one, unless a Mod comes around and they will just move it for you.

Mod Edit:  topic moved to Networking - Hamluis.

Hi.  I have dl'd the MTB.  Seems like an awful lot of info is contained therein, so let me ask if it is safe to expose this info to everyone.  I mean, I know you guys are reputable, but can some wiseguy seeing my info do any harm to me?  Or. perhaps, there would be certain parts of the ld that would be most relevant and safe?

Welcome to the Internet. It is up to you. There is nothing contained in there that would be that bad to expose. But if you want to redact some info please feel free.

Does your desktop system have a wireless adapter? If not, there is no way you will be able to connect wirelessly.

Generally desktop computers do not include wireless adapters.

You will have to buy a USB wireless adapter or a wireless networking card to install in the computer.

Yes, I do have a wireless adapter.  The problem is that I'm so bad a doing wifi/network stuff, that for the last 4 years or so, I had been under the impression that I had hooked up the computer to the adapter.  What had been driving me crazy was that because others could access my adapter and my portable PC worked, I thought that the desktop (main computer) was also hooked up to wifi.  But, as I have learned from this frustrating esercise is that my computer is hooked up via ethernet.  I'm hoping that now someone can help me get the computer to recognize my adapter so that I can wifi download pictures from a wifi camera.

The wireless adapter is not being seen by your PC. How is the adapter attached to the PC? USB? Internal?

Open Device manager and see if there is an unknown device or something under networking with a yellow !

Hope this helps thumbup.gif

Is it a USB adapter or a network card installed inside the computer case?

As far as I know, the computer is connected via ethernet cable. And here's a screen shot of the Device Manager which doesn't show my Linksys WRT 320TN:

Interestingly, I think your simple question re: "Does your desktop system have a wireless adapter?" may have solved my long running problem.  As I have stated many times before, I am really dumb when it comes to establishing networks and wifi hookups, but I now believe that this is the problem: Does my computer (https://www.manualowl.com/m/Gateway%20Computers/DX4720/Manual/148002) with its NVIDIA card (Nvidia GeForce 7100/nForce 630i) allow for direct wireless communication?  And, as you are pointing out with your questioning, I think the simple, but overlooked, solution is to get an adapter.  However, as I know nothing about these things, if I am right, could you suggest what I should get?

No, the NVIDIA does not allow for wireless access. It is ethernet only.

Until you get a wireless adapter, either USB or a card to be installed inside the case, you will not see anything related to your router and networks.

As I stated previously, you can get either one. Cards are bit difficult to find in stores as most of them now carry USB wireless adapters. If you want a card, there are places online you can order from.

A USB wireless adapter works just as well. I have one on my desktop.

I don't know where you are located. If in the US you can get USB adapters at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot and other stores which have computer accessories.

This page has examples of USB adapters http://www.officedepot.com/a/browse/wireless-adapters/N=5+509736/

My first USB adapter was a D Link, which worked well for several years until it somehow got knocked and fell apart.

The one I have now is a Netgear and it also works well.

USB adapters are very easy to use. Follow the directions that come with it.
