Hello BC!

I use a Samsung np370r4e. It is a few years old and is a hand me down from an older relative. When I first received it, it was very slow so I took it to a local computer shop to add in 2GB of RAM (which added up to 4GB) and to clean it up. Apart from sometimes getting hot after a few hours of usage, it has ran very well over the last couple of months.

Two days ago, I used the native Samsung SW Update to run a few updates. I let it run overnight. The next morning, I noticed that my laptop was extremely slow. The boot up and shut down times were (as they usually are) very quick but using Chrome or anything else on the laptop would cause it to frequently lag or hang for about roughly 10 seconds. Chrome (being that which I use the most often) would often freeze or crash.

I checked the RAM and 4GB was detected. After suspecting that the update may have something to do with it, I tried using system restore. The first time I did it, my laptop battery died halfway and I had to do it again. The second attempt was successful.

However, even as I type this, the same symptoms are occurring and they are getting exponentially worse. The hangs and freezes are getting more recurrent. Also, my computer blacked out for about 10 seconds before coming back. Even writing this is a challenge, as my computer keeps hanging.

A gut feeling is telling me to back up my hard drive, just in case, and that's what I'm going to do after I post this.

For reference, I run on Windows 8.1 and the updates made were (before the restore point):
a) Samsung settings

B) Win8.1 Brightness Control Patch F9081.0.0.2\

c) Touchpad Driver

d) Airplane mode control driver

At this point, I'm really not sure if it is a hardware or software problem. It would be an quite a coincidence if a hardware problem popped up at the same time I did the update. Either way, any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there.

It seems clear that the update did not have a positive effect on the laptop and it is causing the instability.

Have you tried to revert those updates, or rather, are you able to do so, since it is difficult for you to work with the laptop?

TinoNgombo,

As mentioned in my first post, I used a system restore to a point before the updates. The status of my computer is still the same unfortunately.

Please run sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

To run sfc /scannow in Windows 8 you will need to open the Elevated Command Prompt.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key windowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.

You will see a window similar to the one below.

command%20prompt%20w8_zpsxjmewau9.png

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens type in sfc /scannow (please note the space between sfc and /scannow), then press Enter.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

If it does find integrity problems the scan will continue.  This will take a while, please have patience and allow it finish.

When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.

To find sfc /scannow log, reopen the Elevated Command Prompt using the Windows key windowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the X key method outlined in the instructions above.

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste the following in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Click on this to open the log, copy it and paste it in your topic.

Hi dc3,

I ran sfc scan. The result were something along the lines of (typing from memory) "...found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

However, when attempting to carry out the final steps, i.e. "When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste the following in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.  findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"" I find an empty txt file titled sfcdetails.txt on my desktop, but it is empty.

What should I do next?

Just to add, I've noticed something peculiar:

I've set my laptop to never go to sleep, as I wanted it to stay on when doing all the previous scans. Ever since then, I noticed that my laptop becomes much more usable. It does not lag or hang. However, if I do switch it off or set it to sleep, when I resume usage it becomes laggy and hangs. However, as before, if left on for sometime (example; when I leave my house), it doesn't hang or lag anymore when I come back to it.

I'm not sure if this is relevant or helpful, but it's something I noticed. Thank you for all your help so far!

Press the Windows key windowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the X key, in the menu that opens click or tap on Command Prompt (Admin).  This will open the Elevated Command prompt.

Copy and paste the command below, then press Enter.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

After this finishes run sfc /scannow again and see if there are any corrupt files.

After following the above, it says, "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Yes, everything appears to be working smoothly now! Thank you very much.

Out of curiosity, what was the problem and do you have any idea what caused it?

File corruption.  When Windows is shutting down it will close all open files.  If these files aren't shut down properly these files can become corrupted.  A loss of power or a hard shut down can cause file corruption.

Oh and one last thing:

The SW Update programme is still prompting me to carry out the software update. One particular one seems important
as currently, my screen brightness configuration is not working and there is a "Windows 8.1 Brightness Control Patch".

The rest are:
- Samsung settings
- Touchpad driver
- Airplane mode control driver
- Bluetooth driver

Is it alright if I carry out these updates?

I'm leery of automated update programs.  If you have an update for Windows you should download it from Microsoft.  Any updates should come from the manufacturer who produced the product.

Alright, will definitely take note of that.

Thanks very much for all your help! It is very much appreciated and it's great to have my laptop back in action.
