This has been going on ever since I started using this provider, about a month and a half. Have been able to do system restore on the one computer but on the other (Windows 7) had to use the impression on the disk. It worked right for about 24 hours, till I ran into a webpage I'm accustomed to being able to use that said I needed Flash Player. After following the link and installing it there was no difference in what Manage Add Ons said, i.e there was a working copy of Flash Object or something but no Flash Player.

Immediately after installing the Flash Player it all started in again. HEAVY r.a.m. use, like 800,000 units for one iteration if iexplore. 20 iterations of internet explorer with apparently default setting to restore the page as soon as you close it. (And now it's starting to happen on the XP computer.) Even with Service Pack 1, the Microsoft install for Explorer 9 and 11 refuses to work. When I located ie 9 on a download site it caused the RAM problem in spades and had to do a clean boot, that is restore the system from the hard drive.

In the fifteen years I've been using computers have dealt successfully with a lot of problems, but never like this. I've been at it so long now so many days and so many hours a day that am afraid I can't even remember what happened and certainly don't know what to do next. I guess I need help with three things:

1. Getting a compatible version of internet explorer - am addicted to saving favicons (It's a great way to have things, lots of them, at you fingertips.) and as far as I know it's the only browser that does that.

2. Have searched out all the best (as far as I can tell) instructions for getting System Restore to save copies periodically, and written my own set of concise instructions, checked services.msc and all dependencies, to no avail. Last time I tried System Restore with Windows 7 (today) it jammed and would not boot after shutdown, finally going into Startup Repair, luckily - guess it didn't want to erase Service Pack 1, which installed after the last full restore. Still this restore point was made while I had the auto-selection of restore points disabled and periodic selection in effect. If it would work I could just manually create restore points, but not if its going to bog down during the restore process. (It was after the big flip out with iexplore described above though.) System Restore would certainly be a good thing to have till I can get another internet provider.

3. Tried everything possible before doing the restore from impression on the disk to save important files, stuffing the flash drive, and tried to set up ad hoc with the other computer. (I find it easier to do it form XP) which apparently got my provider mad and the computer flipped out, now starting it's way down the garden path. Was not able to preserve alot of things I want. But do you know if any of those software things they used to sell on the internet to retrieve files are any good?

Tht would be asking for a lot of help. So I hope you will, and maybe topics are timely with the demise of pre-Windows 10 systems crashing down on us.

Hi all, am just getting around to posting the first requested, so will do that now and hope to get up to date on my responses.

1. Attached is the scannow log. Looks like it really found something. It said "Windows Resources Protection found currupt files and successfully repaired them."

2. I wonder if the flash download was genuine. Was linked from a site I've used for years called Online Clock Radio. But it doesn't mean it was an actual adobe site I was linked to. Didn't look at the address before downloading, which I should have done. Like I say, when I looked at Manage Add Ons after installing it didn't show anything different than before installing flash player. No new add on; no additional running add on.

3. IE 10 would be fine with me as long as the worldwide web can get along with it. Seems that IE 11 is made for touch screens, which this is not, but Microsoft nontheless sings praises of it's performance with Windows 7, saying it's the right browser for this computer. Then you download it and it refuses to install. Remember I had this same problem a few years ago, encountering the same brightly colored download page at Microsoft, and downloading and trying to install IE 11 several times. I think it's nonsense. Yes IE 10 would be fine.

4. Undersanding the way I described my problems with System Restore would be difficult in any case because I couldn't remember the nomenclature commonly used when talking about it, because I was too flusterred. In any case: Attached File  CBS.log   700.11KB   0 downloadsthe computer always creates restore points following some kind of event, such as an update, rather than creating them on a schedule, like once a week. It does this regardless of how I have the parameters set in System Restore and in the Volume Shadow Copy service scheduler. In my experience, since about 2010 System restore has worked less than half the time, both in 7 and XP. And whether it's because the user interface is obtuse or because it just doesn't function properly is impossible to tell.

I would definitely like to have two useable restore points available on command, and if that means creating them once a week manually that would be fine... as long as they don't get erased - according to System Restore setting there's better than 10G available. About 5 for ea. volume.

BruceAttached File  CBS.log   700.11KB   0 downloads

Here is the mini toolbox scan - (seems these errors all occurred after any problems I noticed, that is, didn't notice any today or yesterday. Surprised it made any errors at all. OOOPS! IE just crashed again while trying to edit the last post. Tried to post the unknown-to-me-to-be giant scannow file. Forgot not to use IE.)::

Windows install is dated less than a week ago.

Can you concisely tell us just what you think is a problem?

Looking at the errors above, it seems that you may have a hard drive problem, IMO.

Please follow the instructions provided by Alex in the following:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/567739/problem-with-system-tools/?p=3634826 .

1.The problem I experience occurs while surfing the web, especially if multiple windows are opened with slow-opening ads for instance. This seems to occur in equal measure regardless of what browser - IE, Chrome or Firefox - is used. The browser starts to use a lot of memory and becomes unresponsive. This has occurred once or twice with Google Earth too - in absence of proactive closing of the program or reducing user input to zero, but stopping user input usually has no effect: on memory usage and it just keeps using a large amount, rendering the program unusable and requiring closing, if that is possible. (One time when Google Earth locked-up, one browser was running with one or two windows open - but it was Google Earth that was using a lot of memory, not the browser.) Exception: When I tried to paste the giant scannnow log above using Internet Explorer it crashed while using a lot of CPU, rather than memory.
I
In other words: If not careful the browser or Google Earth becomes unresponsive, using a lot of memory. The entire computer has only become unresponsive once since the restore from the restore partition / newly installed version of Windows, whereas it had done it several times before new install. That one time was after I installed Flash Player. (see 1st post)
The history of restore occurrences concerning this issue (previously there had not been a system restore for at least two years) is: a.) Total Restore from Restore Partition - about a week ago. b.) System Restore after possibly mischivous version of Flash Player installed. c.) One aborted System Restore after another not-remembered unfortunate event - or was that the time with Flash Player?

2. IE 8 frequently encounters websites that say it's incompatible, and on some websites it will not work. In my Gmail account, upon login a warning is seen saying to get a new browser and that it is opening the HTML version of Gmail. This version, while obviously my account, is full of spam, including huge numbers of updates from the one Youtube channel I have subscribed to over the past several years. In the spammy version of Gmail - apparently designed for users who can't update their IE browser - there is no way to file important emails in various files that one has created. It may be posible to delete the lot but didn't try that because there are emails I want to save. The conflict of IE8 incompatibilty versus the impossibilty of installing the reccommended Version 11 of IE for two years now, has taken open geeky mischief to new heights.

I would like if possible to install a version of IE that works, assuming the computer itself is ok.

3. Would like to get System Restore to work reliably.

4. Would like suggestion for software or other means to try and retrieve a few files lost when it was impossible to find a way to save them before using the recovery partition.

Thanks,
Bruce
