Hello Bleeping computer. I come here to seek your excellent help.

So today, I went to do a full scan of my system with my antivirus (Bitdefender Free Edition). To my horror, the notification bubble popped up and said it had found and removed 40 something threats. I found this a bit strange since I had just ran a Malwarebytes scan that came up completely clean, and my computer was running fine. I tried to view what it had found, but it kept glitching out (Apparently, Bitdefender Free has a reputation for glitches). I tried to view the "An on demand scan is ongoing" event (Even though it said the scan had finished), but it said zero threats found in the event. Also, when I went to the threat control tab, there is nothing in the quarantine. I know that Bitdefender Free will sometimes delete infected files instead of quarantining them, but it seemed like out of the 40 something threats it said it found, at least a few would be quarantined.

The program was glitching out pretty bad, reloading the events and not allowing me to clear them (A system reboot fixed this). I continued to scan with Hitmanpro which found a couple PuP registry entries (Which, since my trial had expired, I manually deleted with Regedit), and AdwCleaner, which found a registry entry for a proxy server override? (Something like that), does that mean that I was using a proxy server? If so, That's bad.

I don't think my system is currently infected (But, who knows!). I'm not even sure if BD even found any real threats, since it was glitching out, and nothing displayed in the quarantine. I'm probably going to switch over to Avast, because if it was a real infection, Bit Defender let it through, and didn't even let me see the list of infections.

I'd like to hear your take on this, and hopefully help me clear up some confusion. Thank you.

§  Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.

§  Click on Scan button.

§  When the scan has finished click on Clean button.

§  Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.

§  Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.

§  You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S0].txt as well.

---------

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

§  Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.

§  Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".

§  The tool will open and start scanning your system.

§  Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

Hello! Thanks for helping me. Sorry I didn't post sooner, I was busy the last day. I didn't run the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool since, HitmanPro uses the Kaspersky engine, and a scan with it came up clean. Please let me know if it is required :)

So far so good.

You have outdated Java, please install fresh version.

-------------

We need just to confirm.

ESET Online Scanner

§  Click here to download the installer for ESET Online Scanner and save it to your Desktop.

§  Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.

§  Right click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and select Run as Administrator.

§  Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.

§  Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.

§  Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:

o    Remove found threats

o    Scan archives

o    Scan for potentially unsafe applications

o    Enable Anti-Stealth technology

§  Click Start to begin scanning.

§  ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.

§  When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).

§  Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.

§  Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

You don't need Java.

Using Java is an unnecessary security risk...especially using older versions which have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.Although Java is commonly used in business environments and many VPN providers still use it, the average user does not need to install Java software.I recommend just uninstalling Java if you don't use it.If you must use Java, many security researchers and computer security organizations caution users to limit their usage and to disable Java Plug-ins or add-ons in your browsers.

If you need Java for a specific Web site, consider adopting a two-browser approach. If you normally browse the Web with Firefox, for example, consider disabling the Java plugin in Firefox, and then using an alternative browser (Chrome, IE9, Safari, etc.) with Java enabled to browse only the site(s) that require(s) it.

Krebs On Security: ...Java

To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, consider disabling Java in web browsers until adequate updates are available. As with any software, unnecessary features should be disabled or removed as appropriate for your environment.

OK. The ESET Online Scanner didn't find anything. :)

Thanks quietman7 for reminding me of the dangers of Java. I do however need Java (I'm a Java programmer).

I did see in the checkup file that it says my 32-bit Java install is out of date. However, I don't have the 32-bit version of java installed (At least it doesn't show up in uninstall programs). I do have the 64-bit version, but that is up to date.

Thanks.

Sorry for delay.

Yes, you are clean.  :thumbup2:

Empty your temp folders using TFC (Temporary File Cleaner)

§  Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link

§  Save any unsaved work. (TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!)

§  Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista or above, right-click on the file and choose "Run As Administrator".)

§  Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.

§  Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway allowing Windows to load normally (not into Safe Mode) to ensure a complete clean.

------------

This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download  DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

§  Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)

§  Remove disinfection tools

§  Create registry backup

§  Purge System Restore

Reset system settings
Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished, a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

No problem about the delay. :thumbup2:

I'm leaving to go on a small two day trip, but I'll run the tools first thing when I get back.

Thanks for all the help. Do you know what I should do about that 32-bit Java install that it says I have? I did have the 32-bit version at some point, but I replaced it with the 64-bit version quite some time ago.
