Hello!

I've had numerous issues with my laptop over the years but in the last months I've had lots of CHKDSK scans on start up and finally in the last couple of days I had a BSOD.

I managed to recover by running cmd.exe sfc / scannow in safe mode but the laptop reverted back to BSOD a day later. Please help

OS - Windows Vista x64 originally installed OEM.

HP Pavilion dv3500 Notebook bought in 2009. The OS is the original.

CPU - Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8400 @2.26GHz 2.27GHz

Video Card NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS

Start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Be sure to run the hard drive diagnostics (I suspect the hard drive due to the issues with CHKDSK popping up).

Will be back shortly with an analysis of the reports (have to go feed my dogs :0)

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Dog's have been fed (and the guinea pig also :0)

C: drive only has about 1% free space.  Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance.  Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

Your UEFI/BIOS (version F.19) dates from 2010.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.
I'm not real concerned with this on a Vista machine - but you should keep it in mind for the future.

The OS was originally installed in 2008.  You may want to consider a fresh (clean) install of Windows to get rid of the extra junk that accumulates over the years.

Lot's of networking BSOD's in the WER section of MSINFO32.  Also lot's of application crashes in vlc.exe.

I'd suggest uninstalling the VLC Media Player for now.  Should you decide to reinstall it after the system is stabilized, please download a fresh copy of the latest version to install.

Don't forget to uninstall the codecs that you've downloaded also.

As this is a Vista system, the simplest thing for you to do would be to visit the HP support site for your system and update ALL of the drivers.

I believe that your system is a Pavilion DV307ea, and as such, this is the link for it:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-dv3500-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-series/3774492/model/3816539#Z7_3054ICK0KGTE30AQO5O3KA30R1

If that doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

Thanks for your really rapid reply. I appreciate all your help. I hope your dogs and guinnea pig enjoyed their meal  .

So, I've been running memtest86 5.01 overnight. After pass 10 I'll get to clearing out the junk on my harddrive, and updating the drives which you have suggested.

I'll let you know how I get on after I've finished.

So I have cleared out the c: hard drive but d: hard drive can't be further cleared because all the files there are HP invent recovery partitions.

That's really strange about the BIOS, I found the update (Jan 2011) but it would require a reboot so didn't run it. But what is strange is that I already have the update file in my program files (x86) which means I must have installed the update previously. I don't see how I can still have the 2010 version ... but I do!

I'm considering updating my OS, this is a last chance to see if I can save some money for a while :)

I've uninstalled VLC player but I can't uninstall the vista codec package. It shows up in the program list but there is no option to uninstall/change. Is it worth me trying to find the codec pacakge again to reinstall and then hopefully be able to uninstall?

I've gone through the HP support driver update list and updated, a lot was already there so I overwrote. A couple of drivers already had a newer version installed and a few had a "program might not have installed" but I hope I managed everything.

BTW I'm sorry I forgot to say earlier, the BSOD had an "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"  with "stop: 0x0000000A" notice. The CHKDSK had a "deleting index entry WUDFPf.sys in index $130 of file 16438" and later "recovering orphaned file WUDFPf.sys (164528) into file 16438". I don't know if this is relevant or not. But I didn't have any CHKDSK when I rebooted today and everything seems to work ok :) No BSOD fingers crossed.

Try the free Revo Uninstaller to remove the codec:  http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Beyond that, let's just wait and see if the system BSOD's again.

If it does, please submit a fresh set of reports and we'll move on from there.

Hello again,

So I had another BSOD. It followed a CHKDSK the previous day and quite slow performance. I had a few problems with Firefox shockwave crashing and script errors.

Today's BSOD had a Registry_error note.

After rebooting there was another CHKDSK. The log on was quite slow with just a black screen before the desktop came on.

I'm attaching the sysnative and perfmon reports. Thanks!

In most cases BSOD's are due to:

- 3rd party (non-Windows) drivers (about 90% of the time)

- hardware (about 10% of the time)

- Windows drivers (less than 1% of the time)

The random errors are usually a symptom of either hardware or Windows problems.

If the system has passed all of the hardware diagnostics ( http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html )

Then you're looking at reinstalling Windows as the next troubleshooting step.

Here's a link to a brief "how-to" that I wrote a while back:  http://www.carrona.org/canned.html#clean

Good luck!

Sorry I'm a bit slow, yes, you did already give me all the links to carrona! I'll go through the tests.

Thanks for your help!

I get an email each time that you respond to this topic - so if this doesn't fix things, just reply back here and we'll work at it some more.

Good luck!

Hello! Sorry for a slow reply, I have been quite busy.

So it took ages to back up the laptop but finally I managed to run Driver Verifier. After rebooting, the start up was very slow and most programs except for windows power, volume and network did not appear in the task bar. The start menu also froze so I closed down with the power button.

The next start up was also slow so I wanted to check Driver Verifier was running, After cmd verifier /query there was a BSOD with the message: "... device driver attempting to corrupt the system. The faulty driver currently on the kernel stack must be replaced with a working version."

I had a few problems zipping the minidump but I hope I managed it. Please find attached. If I should do anything more or should run more carrona tests, please let me know.

Many thanks,

Although the minidump doesn't directly blame the hard drive, the behavior that you describe is most likely a hard drive error.

And the BSOD describes errors in the file system on the hard drive - so again, it's most likely that the hard drive is to blame here.

In order to verify that, you'll have to run hard drive diagnostics.  Here's a link to that page on my website:  http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

Let us know the results and we'll move on from there.

Thanks for your reply!

I followed your advice and ran the hard drive diagnostic from your website. My hard drive is: TOSHIBA Mk2552GSX. I used SeaTools for DOS and did a long test. I'm not sure how to retrieve the log files but at the end of the boot test the results read:

Short DST PASSED

Long Test PASSED

Test Results PASSED

If you need more information from the hard drive or I should run more tests, just let me know!

As general information, the start up continues to be patchy, sometimes displaying all programs in the tool bar, sometimes security/AVAST doesn't start. CHKDSK also runs from time to time. There aren't any BSODs but the system just freezes and I restart by pressing the power button.

OK, it appears that there's several possibilities here:

- the hard drive is bad despite the test results (try another test - maybe the Western Digital DLG for WIndows)

- cabling is bad (try other cables)

- the storage controller is bad (either the driver or hardware)

- the motherboard is bad

- there are programs that are corrupting your file system

Please let us know the result of the other hard drive diagnostic.

Please uninstall MalwareBytes.  Should you decide to reinstall it AFTER the system is stabilized, please DO NOT enable the trial for the Pro version - as that's the part that runs in memory and could be conflicting with your antivirus.

Have you considered backing up your data, wiping the hard drive, and then installing Windows again?

If so, have a look at this link:  http://www.carrona.org/canned.html#clean

Hello and thanks for your reply!

I ran an extended test using Western Digital WinDlg and the results also came back as a pass, to be clear: SMART status - PASS; test result - PASS.

I've read through your post at carrona.org/canned and perhaps I should just work through your advice there. I'll have to check through hardware and malware before wiping the hard drive and installing an updated OS in any case :)

So, I'd like to say thanks for your generous support and time. I really appreciate it as it's been a big help. I have to say your carrona.org has been a revelation - so much useful information! I've also uninstalled MalwareBytes, it's good to know that it can destabilise the antivirus.
