Hello. I have a windows xp, pentium 4, 1 gb memory, symantec(norton) internet security and virus software, and my computer seems to have slowed down considerably. Also, there are at least 50 processes running when I look in task manager. This can't be good, and so I need some help. I ran HijackThis, ver 1.99.1, and my log is posted here:

It's not too urgent, but if anyone has some time to help me, I'd appreciate it very much. Its frustrating to spend hours on a task that should really take about 15 minutes, and even to restart it takes half an hour.

There wasn''t anything you listed in Add/Remove programs to uninstall and so i ran the uninstaller, and it worked. Also, there was no Purity scan folder or anything. When I ran VundoFix, it scanned and said nothing was found. Here is the vundofix log:
VundoFix V5.1.2

Running as SYSTEM
from c:\windows\system32\VundoFix.exe

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.4.2.5

Java version is 1.5.0.3

Scan started at 4:44:03 PM 7/13/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

And here is the HijackThis log now:

I did what you asked but for several of the things you asked me to remove instead of actually getting rid of them when I clicked remove, a messaged showed up that said that an error occured in the process, would I like to removed it from the add/remove programs list?

Yes, please select Yes when it asks you that, that means the files were already gone.

You may want to print out these instructions or save it as a text document, and use them as a reference. If you have any questions regarding the fix, please ask us before proceeding. It is also important for you to don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order.

As I went through the process a error popped up in Hijack this, right after I clicked on fix checked. I wasn't able to copy down the error, but it said it was moved to the Notepad. When I looked in all recent files and the Notepad, I couldn't find it. I clicked on continue, and it finished up. The result is this:

Hello. Um, the computer won't restart unless I use manual (hard?) restart by depressing the on button on the actual computer. So thats what I did, but other than that, the instructions you gave me worked well. Other than that, the system speed seems to be the same as when I first came for help, which leads me to believe that the main problem with the computer may be something we haven't addressed yet. Thanks for sticking with me, and I was wondering how badly infected my computer is compared to others you have come up against.
here is my hijack this log:

Hello,

Actually you have lots of junk there before, and we've already busted them all, I wonder why it is still slow.. Well you can fix this with HJT to gain a lil boost :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"

There are other optionals that you can fix there, but I don't know if you use them so I won't touch it.

About the Restart problem, there are many reasons why it's happening. There are better people than me when it comes to me as I think this is not malware related anymore. Try to post a topic here explaining your problem :

Windows XP Forum

Other than that.. Your log is now clean! Posted Image If you still have any other problems/questions, just post them here.

Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.
  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
