I have an older laptop that is running Windows XP.  This is not my main computer but I do like to use it when I do not want to use tablet or desktop.  It virtually will not browse internet in regular windows mode.  It freezes and takes forever to go from one internet site to another.  However, the internet works fine when in safe mode.  I have Malware Anti Malware Free and AVG 2015 Free.  I have run scans in both safe mode and windows mode and it does not detect anything.  I also have CC Cleaner which I run frequently.  I have downloaded Autoruns and tried to delete some startup loads using your data base.  However, many are not in your data base.  I did find some that I could eliminate on startup but not that many because if it was not in your database, I left alone.  Do you have any other suggestions I could try.  As I said, this laptop is older and not my main computer but I would really like to try and revive it so that I can at least use it sometimes.

If a client comes to me not only now but, for quite a while now, I will not let them spend time, money, effort or thought on an XP machine.  For starters they absolutely should not be used connected to the Internet.

Certainly @ this point in time, if an XP machine is not working properly, just don't bother w/ it... can't be used on the Net, anyway.  As for non-Net use, still, not worth bothering w/ it.  Time to just let it go & move on.  After 15 yrs, put it out to pasture.

If you only want to revive it and use for net , and not any personal files saved to it or info as such ?

Then just reformat it with XP and your done , also create an image of the partition as a backup.

I would partly agree with you in using XP in 2015 , but some people still do and 98SE.

If its a software issue its an easy fix , but hardware is another issue.

I run an XP Mach for net and have no issues and Win 7 on 3 Desktops and 1 Lappy.

I also repair PCs and for friends at a low low cost because i can , some people dont like change on their choice of Operating systems or are scared to update and relearn a system , abit like cars ? i dont need a 30,000 dollar car - my 5,000 dollar car runs fine and i get to A from B.

With Pcs  its the driver behind the wheel that causes issues not the system .

Do you think if everyone ran a Win 8 systems that Forums would cease to exists with issues...?

You are missing the point.  Using XP on the Net has nothing to do w/ clinging to old things, resisting change or liking something.  The fact that some people use something does not mean it is alright.  Nothing can justify or explain using XP on the Net.  Nor is threat that exists in using it anything the End User can control or mitigate.  They can be completely oblivious to what is happening & blissfully THINK they have everything under control... they do not & cannot.

It is dangerous & perilous.  Nothing can protect it nor does.  And not only can a machine become 'infected' but, it can be used to infect other machines, as well, from theirs.

Plus, heaps of things are not ( any longer) written for or built for XP.  It is 15 yrs old, passé, obsolete & continuing to use it is foolish, unnecessary and inexplicable.

And if you are 'helping' friends w/ IT issues then, be helpful & have them get the heck off XP.  And your (more) expensive car analogy doesn't work since, money is not @ issue here.  Nothing can be used as an objection to dropping XP nor should be.  Scared of using something else, you say.  Truth is they should be scared of continuing to use XP on the Net.  I someone can't bear to leave some old XP machine & be w/ contemporary technology, @ least, keep the damn thing off the Web!!  IF not for their own sake, for the sake of other computers & Users across the Globe.
And even if software, trying to fix an XP machine is the epitome of misguided & misplaced energy nor it is doing anything helpful for an End User.

Nor was there any reference to "everyone" running 8.1

If were to advocate any one OS as being smart to run it would be Windows 10.

It is dangerous & perilous.

I have several clients, including my wife's computer, that run XP and it works great. If you know how, you can lock XP down very well, and any modern firewall will run on it. None of my clients have been hacked, and they get the same PUP infections that the 7 and 8 users get. In addition, Hijack this works very well on XP and I use it frequently. The few that do have problems allow their children to download "free" games and then get adware and PUPs that eventually slow the computer to almost standstill. Others surf into really iffy sites such as pron and then get infections. But the same applies to Windows 7 and 8 also. I see no difference.

Sorry, about your rose coloured glasses but, as an IT Pro giving quality advice I will not budge.  We are not talking about surfing porn sites... of course, I agree about dangerous surfing, regardless of what OS... this is not any of that.  And cause you think you can safely "lock down" XP... for the majority of End Users that is not & will not be the case.  Plus you are ignoring a machine can SEEM to "work fine" (which isn't meaningful or the point) and still be infected & or be a Bot propagating malware & malicious code to other machines.

Leading people to think using XP is OK is not very nice.  It is not hard to have a modern, safe-to-use computer @ an affordable cost instead of encouraging people to STILL use XP.

do you have a recovery partition on your hard drive? if you do a speccy readout that  should indicate that you do. Most OEM PCs such as laptops do.  you will need to backup the data and any programs you need to keep which should be nice and easy with a cheapie usb stick drive, as a recovery will reset the XP to the way it was when it first issued to the PC and erase everything stored and may be service pack 2, if so you will need the service pack 3 kb file definitely. there is a pinned topic at the top of this XP section that will guide you through the service pack 3 installation

this should get the XP lappy back to the way you want it, functional and efficient.

other than that, ranchhand issued nice advice about keeping your XP laptop optimized.

Gentlemen, between Posts #2 and #7 this discussion has wandered some way off topic.

While I am not necessarily disagreeing with the viewpoint taken by Drew and others in this thread it is not relevant to the OP's problem. His problem is that his internet connection works fine in safe mode but not in normal mode. Please let the discussion go back to considering how to fix this problem.

Oh my I never considered that using XP could be harmful to others.  I only use this machine to browse the web and sometimes to type and print something from Word.  I also use it for an offline 3D Home Architect house drawing program that is an excellent program but so old that it will not install on my Windows 8.1 desktop.  The newer version of the 3D Home is horrible and way too complicated.  I do not check or send email on this XP laptop.  I have no pictures or documents that are important.  Someone mentioned using Hijack This.  Does anyone think it would be worth it to try or should I really just trash the laptop as other have suggested?  When I run the disk analyizer on CC Cleaner to see what is taking up space, it says pictures take up .62%, music .12%, documents .40%, video .11%, Other files 71%. The only thing I care about keeping is keeping either Chrome or Firefox, Microsoft Word, My 3D drawing program and some virus and malware protection. I am just not knowledgeable enough to know what to remove.  And I agree that it is not worth spending any money on.

Maroper,

What one does on or with a machine, how much time, what data not at issue. One person offered great advice catering nicely to having XP shine. Just can't be connected to the Net. Not to say it is not a kewl OS that cannot serve well, just not on line.

I can definitely understand the desire to resuscitate the aging XP laptop.  There are a myriad of variables that could be causing it to perform poorly, and a recovery is the simplest, most direct way to get the PC back to original functionality. i had to do it on my old xp unit a couple of years ago, and it was kind of overwhelming  so i understand it is something to be taken seriously. backing up important data is paramount before the procedure gets executed..

even though XP is end-of-life, there are so many aspects to it that make it desireable to keep functional, such as the applications that you describe.

also, if you pull up your task manager to check your RAM usage, that could be the culprit also, as you are calling up your browser it is using large amounts of RAM,  and the safe mode might be leaving enough RAM for your browsers to address before being at maximum capacity, forcing the system to access the hard drive for memory address space, which is frustratingly unresponsive..

However, the internet works fine when in safe mode.

Ok, good troubleshooting move; it would appear that something is loaded in normal boot that is interfering with XP. All the XP units that I maintain fly like a jet on the internet, so the problem is not XP. In the run box, type msconfig and Enter. Check the Services and Startup tabs. 1x1 disable the entries and run the internet. If suddenly your internet access starts to run fast again you have found the culprit.
