I've been grappling for about a year w/my desktop monitor failing to start about once every 20 bootups.  On boot, if I hear an ominous grinding, as if the hard drive is failing, monitor will light up.  If boot is quiet, monitor stays dark and I have to force shutdown and restart after waiting a couple minutes for platters to stop spinning, at which point the monitor has always started except for just one time, requiring a third bootup.  I've checked all connections and blown out dust inside tower case.  I don't have a spare monitor to change this one out with, so can't troubleshoot that way, and I hate to buy a new graphics card, since the PC is 7 years old and may not need it.  At this point, I keep weekly backups and figure I'll keep doing this until it fails entirely.  Any thoughts?
