just updated libc6, restarted, now desktop will not load at all. I am a bit new to kali - but i know the basics. I did not change anything or remove anything that should have messed with the desktop. After updating, i restarted. When it came back up, it was a black screen with the kali loading cursor. ctrl alt f1-f6 works with the terminal coming up, but i cannot run any programs. I have tried:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get check
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install gnome
sudo apt-get (distro thing, i dont remember it off the top of my head, i used --help to find it),

and more regular things involving trying to fix corrupted files but nothing works

I am dual booting, dont see why that is necessary...

The desktop never shows up, it just remains a black screen with the loading cursor. I can manage to get on with ctrl, alt, f1 and startx, but whenver i leave it with ctrl alt f2-f6 it no longer works. If i go back to f7 it is a black screen with the loading cursor.

The same thing happened to me and one of the members of BC showed me this- you might try it and see if it helps-http://howtoubuntu.org/how-to-repair-restore-reinstall-grub-2-with-a-ubuntu-live-cd   I had several distros installed and some how grub got corrupted.I followed the directions here and it fixed the issue- let me know if this helps. You have to do it from a LIVE Linux distro- it could be the one you used to install Kali- Paul

Don't get irritated as I don't know much about all this but thought I would ask a few questions.  What do you mean by Updated, did the system ask for this update or did you update it manually for some reason?

I'm sure you know not many are running Kali, it's a Security Penetrating Testing program for advanced users.   I think only one, maybe two here are using it and probably not that often, so you might not get much help.

Not sure how running those commands would help anything.

Did you try going into memtest, or some similar recovery tool?

The grub repair as suggested might also be helpful but unless you saw some kind of error I guess your out of luck for now.

You might want to go here to get some help.

Updated means just that the system was updated. It dont matter if the system asked for it or not.

Maybe you should find out then.

apt-get check

This command is a diagnostic tool. It does an update of the package lists and checks for broken dependencies.

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Do I really have to explain the meaning of these 2?

sudo apt-get install gnome

Attempting to install gnone.

sudo apt-get (distro thing, i dont remember it off the top of my head, i used --help to find it),

Yes it is.

Was it dist-upgrade by any chance?

Did you try repairing Grub with the article I shared with you?
