hi, my Asus Zenfone 4 A400CG, bought in november 2014 started overheating everytime i used wifi; then after some months the battery started draining fast even if i did not use it for any activity. now it is not starting. i mean, when i switch on the phone, the ASUS animation appears and then the ASUS logo appears with the spinning circle and it keeps displayed forever, without booting. luckily the warranty period did not end yet, so i took the phone to the nearest service center. they said as step 1 they will factory-reset the phone and see if that solves the problem [and in the process, all userdata will be destroyed and they are not responsible for it :( ] and if that does not solve the problem, they will replace the motherboard of the phone. but unfortunately i have not backed up my data in the phone, like contacts, SMS, whatsapp conversations, etc yet and so i got back the phone from them saying i will come back once i have backed up my data from the phone.

my question is can anyone please help me how to retrieve my data from the phone before i give it back to the service center, coz i cannot boot into the phone as of now? :(

If the device won't boot I don't know of a way to retrieve the data. If you have a google account which being an Android user, you should have. Your contacts are there. Other than that I don't know of a way to retrieve anything else, Since nothing has been backed up prior to your hardware failure.

Can you get to Recovery Mode by holding the power button and volume down at the same time?

I am not sure. I don't have that much experience with an Android phone. I found that link doing a search on recovery. If you can get to Recovery Mode maybe it is possible to sync it to a PC or copy the data to an internal SD card.

Edit: You may have better luck at the Asus Zenphone forum.
