Hi

Can anyone please offer a bit of advice? Interent explorer is running incredibly slowly, on my friends HP Presario CQ61 Notebook, it is taking ages to load a page, to be honest the whole laptop has completely slowed down. I have run Malware bytes and removed any potential infections and I have run the windows disk clean but no joy. Google chrome is marginally faster but still not usable.

There is a toshiba laptop, a desktop and tablet all connected to the same wifi network and they are all running fine. I did a broadband speed test on the HP and the Tosiba. The HP has a ping of  2123ms but the Tosiba is 92ms.

The HP is newer than my Tosiba and it is running windows 7 64 bit, it has 2GB ram.

Any advice or pointers would be very much appriciated.

Many thanks

Hello itter!

Do you know if you have any browser extensions or add ons running on your internet browsers? That can slow down your load times a lot.
You can click the settings icons on both IE and Chrome to find out.
For IE: Click the settings icon in the top right and click "Manage Add-ons"
For Chrome: Click the settings icon in the top right and click "Settings", then on the left sidebar click "Extensions"

If there's anything weird, remove them.

Also you could try resetting your browser settings in both Chrome and IE.

Have you tried running other virus and malware scanning programs, such as Hitman Pro or Adwcleaner?

Malwarebytes doesn't catch everything, but it catches a lot! Sometimes you need a second opinion and Hitman Pro is one of my favorites. However, I've found that Adwcleaner can find certain things that both MBAM and Hitman Pro can't.

Also, you could run CCleaner if you haven't done that and use their temporary file cleaner and registry repair.

You can find quick links to these programs at <Link Removed>

I'm not sure if I can post that link for you or not (if not I'll remove it), but you can download and try those programs for free and hopefully it will help you out.

Let me know what you find out.

Edit: Link removed to a website that has not been previously approved for downloads. ~ Animal

Also, you could run CCleaner if you haven't done that and use their temporary file cleaner and registry repair.

Registry Cleaners aren't well seen here. These programs are known to be harmful to the system and should not be used for any reason there is. It's a known fact that using Registry Cleaners can easily break a Windows installation, to the point where a complete reinstallation might be needed. Here's a few myths about using these programs, and why they are just plainly false.
  • "Using a Registry Cleaner will improve a system's performance" - False. The Windows Registry is a big database which contains information on everything present on the system, from the boot settings to how your programs looks when you open them. There's so many entries in it that cleaning even thousands of them isn't enough to boost a system performance. Also, there's no studies, tests, benchmarks, etc. which shows that using Registry Cleaners actually improve a system speed;
  • "Using a Registry Cleaner will fix all your errors" - False. Using a Registry Cleaner won't fix any problems at all. In fact, it have more chances to create them if anything. There's no program that can fix every problems in a simple click, and there probably never will. If you have an error, it's better to troubleshoot that error in particuliar by finding what's causing it and fixing it than using a software that might give you more errors;
  • "If you don't use a Registry Cleaner, you'll leave a door open for malware" - False. It is rare that malware will actually hijack orpheans keys and keypairs in the Registry to create persistence or install themself. They'll usually create their own keys/keypairs since they have been instructed (coded) to do so, and the creator cannot expect every system he'll infect to have leftover keys. Also, pretty much only Reg Loading Points in the Registry would be of any interest for a malware to hijack, and these are usually occupied already, or quickly deleted when empty;
  • Registry Cleaners aren't Registry Defraggers - These are two different kind of software who have two distinct function each.
  • On a last note, there's a lot of Registry Cleaners out here that won't create a back-up of your Registry before applying the changes they make. Which means that if you use them and clean entries that prevents Windows to reboot after, locking you out of your computer, you won't be able to restore a precedent Registry back-up via the Recovery PE. This means that if you can't fix the boot issue after that, you'll most likely be forced to reinstall Windows;
Registry Cleaners were used back in the days by developers who were using a OLE-schema for their applications. They used these to clean the Registry after uninstalling their programs, just in case there was traces of it left behind that could affect a reinstallation. These were back in the Windows 95 and Windows 98 days and this practice isn't in effect anymore. Therefore, there's no reason for you to use such programs and quite a few to avoid them instead.

Here's more articles on Registry Cleaners that are worth a read if you want to learn more about them and why you shouldn't use them.

Fair enough, I have never once had any problem cleaning computers with malware and viruses, and running CCleaner's temporary file remover and registry repair afterward.

While I do agree that there are probably thousands of bunk registry repair programs out there (have to remove them all the time), CCleaner always seems to help at least a little bit.

I don't recommend using any other registry cleaner, but I have used CCleaner on many many many computers, and it backs up the registry before making changes.

And those myths, I would never agree to any of those, lol, except maybe the performance part. I have actually used it several times where it did (at least seemed to) help with speed and/or get rid of error messages.

A lot of users and helpers here agrees that CCleaner is a great program to clean out temporary files and accomplish a few other tasks, but Registry Cleaners are to be avoided at all cost. It takes one wrong entry to be deleted to force a reinstallation of Windows, and it's not worth the risk. Plus, malware removal tools will take care of removing malicious entries from the Registry if there's any. There's no need to use CCleaner's dangerous Registry Cleaner feature for that.

Hi MalwareSolutions and Aura,

Thank you both very much for the advice. I have reset the browsers. I have checked for any addons but there aren't anything apart from Java ™ plug-in2 and Shockwave Flash. Please excuse me for being a novice here but should I leave these enabled or should I disable these?

Also I am left a little confused here about ccleaner. Should I use it or not and if not could you recommend anything else I could use that would do the same job safely?

On a plus note the Laptop is running a bit quicker since I have reset the browsers :)

Hello,

I will take this thread since Aura is unavailable.

You can leave Java and Flash, but if you don't use Java then I recommend that you uninstall it.

CCleaner is okay for cleaning temporary files and caches, but DO NOT touch the Registry Cleaner function! Bleeping Computer does not recommend the use of registry cleaners.

Please run these tools to get an overview of your computer.

Hello,

SecurityCheck can take a long time to run if your drive is considerably fragmented, since the fragmentation calculation phase is always the longest.

Please uninstall the following software from Programs and Features:

Acrobat.com (HKLM-x32\...\{287ECFA4-719A-2143-A09B-D6A12DE54E40}) (Version: 1.6.65 - Adobe Systems Incorporated)
Activate Norton Online Backup (HKLM-x32\...\{C57BCDE1-7CB9-467D-B3BA-7E119916CDC1}) (Version: 1.1.20.0 - Symantec)
Adobe AIR (HKLM-x32\...\Adobe AIR) (Version: 1.5.3.9130 - Adobe Systems Inc.)
ALOT Appbar (HKLM-x32\...\alotAppbar) (Version: - ALOT)
AOL UK Toolbar (HKCU\...\AOL UK Toolbar) (Version: - )
AOL UK Toolbar (HKLM-x32\...\AOL UK Toolbar) (Version: - )
Ask Toolbar (HKLM-x32\...\{86D4B82A-ABED-442A-BE86-96357B70F4FE}) (Version: 1.15.25.0 - Ask.com)
Ask Toolbar Updater (HKCU\...\{79A765E1-C399-405B-85AF-466F52E918B0}) (Version: 1.2.6.36191 - Ask.com)
Bing Bar (HKLM-x32\...\{3365E735-48A6-4194-9988-CE59AC5AE503}) (Version: 7.3.132.0 - Microsoft Corporation)
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (HKLM-x32\...\{2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F}) (Version: 7.5.6227.252 - Google Inc.)
Java 7 Update 45 (HKLM-x32\...\{26A24AE4-039D-4CA4-87B4-2F83217017FF}) (Version: 7.0.450 - Oracle)
muvee Reveal (HKLM-x32\...\{DE626616-D7C4-4F00-7E0B-EAF26FA65749}) (Version: 7.0.43.12698 - muvee Technologies Pte Ltd)
TalkTalk Mail Toolbar (HKLM-x32\...\TalkTalk Mail Toolbar) (Version: - )

If you run into any issues, let me know.

Percentage of memory in use: 95%
Total physical RAM: 1788.2 MB
Available physical RAM: 80.89 MB
Total Virtual: 3576.4 MB
Available Virtual: 1475.23 MB

This is too much for Windows to handle... Edit: My bad, the MiniToolbox log shows that you are using Home Premium. Should be ok.

You will need to add more RAM. Windows 7 doesn't do well with only 5% free RAM.

Also you might want to consider switching antivirus since Trend Micro is not exactly the lightest of the bunch.

Let me know what you decided to do next.

Regards,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks again for the help. I am currently running the security check. It is not my laptop and I have been trying to help a friend out while visiting. I have to leave now so they have joined the forum and I will pass this on to them to complete. They are called andantex.

Cheers :)

Please proceed with the uninstallation, and let me know if you intend to switch to another antivirus.

Can you open Task Manager and see which process(es) is/are taking up the most CPU?

hello Alex

Uninstallations now completed. Can you recommend protection (other than Norton and MacAfee)?

Really appreciate your help

For now, perform a clean boot using these instructions and uninstall Trend Micro.

After that reboot and install Emsisoft Anti-Malware instead.

When you are done, run this.

AdwCleaner by Xplode

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on I agree button.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • DO NOT CLEAN ANYTHING! Removal will be done after analysis of the log.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Logfile button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
Regards,
Alex
