'System' process using 90% of CPU

For nearly a month now, the "system" process has been randomly activating and chewing up 60-99% of my CPU time. This started when I began using EDonkey for file sharing, so I'm sure it's a virus or spyware of some kind. What I need to know is: What exactly is it? What specific program installed it? How do I remove it?
If anyone has had similar problems, or knows what's wrong, please fill me in...

Have you ran a virus scan on your computer and seen if they find anything?

for some free online/downloadable virus scanners

Then I want you to download and run ad-aware, see link in above topic, and run it on your machine. Clean up what it finds and then post a HijackThis log. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions

I have done several scans with the newest virus definitions using Norton Internet Security. Sadly, not only did they find nothing related to the 'system' process, they also failed to detect several trojan horses that I later discovered running in my task list. I get the impression that this problem can't be solved by computer scanners, but I'll give it another try...

Well. I used ad-aware and spybot - both found and cleaned a number of minor adware apps and tracking cookies. However, upon restarting, i found my original problem still in effect - the 'system' process is still chewing up my processor. My machine's cleaner now, but still needs to be fixed.

Lets try using Hijackthis to see what is running on your computer. Please follow these steps:

reate a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

Ok you have a few things in here. Go into start, control panel and double-click on Add/Remove programs. Then uninstall newdotnet or new.net. If you see both remove both. Reboot when they are uninstalled and post a new log.

'New.net' is not installed on my computer - I removed it manually several days ago. I had not yet gotten around to removing it's run-on-startup registry key. Having just done that, here is my new log file:

First, please move the hijackthis.exe to its own directory like c:\hijackthis. Otherwise certain functions will not work. Also when you post the log, post the entire log please.

Then click on Start, Settings, control Panel and double-click on add/remove programs. Remove the Wintools program.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Ok, I tried everything. "Wintools" does not appear on the registered programs list, and fsg_4104.exe does not exist on my hard drive (I deleted the adware folder several days ago). I cleared all system restore points and used hijackthis to clean up the indicated files...

I dont see anything else wrong with this log. Everything looks good. I know edonkey has a habit of not shutting down when you tell it to, and though it appears to be closed is still running in the background. Is it possible this is happening to you?

Thank you, everything appears to be normal now. In the end I simply deleted Kazaa and eDonkey, which probably helped a great deal. I am planning to read up on Kazaa Lite or eMule, but I have a feeling these will cause the same problems all over again. If you have any suggestions let me know, but for now thank you for your help.

Kazaa lite is not being developed anymore from what I understand as they were sued by Sharman. Emule is a very good program though.

But regardless of the programs you use, p2p networks are just a breeding ground for malware, so gotta be careful
