I originally posted a thread in the Malware forum and worked with "nasdaq" to clean up issues. My topic name was "System slow IE keeps hanging with not responding, hd light shows high disk usage".

We appear to have cleaned up issues to the point where the system is operating fairly well, but it will not allow me to create a restore point.  At nasdaq's advice, we tried several things with no success.  I was looking thru the event log and discovered the following error which he thinks might suggest that I may need to do a "repair/install" but suggested I start a new thread here before jumping off that cliff.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

below is the error message which brought me here.

Hello,

if the components hive is corrupt we will need to repair it before System Restore will work again.

{Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\??\C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder -> Please name this zip file to COMPONENTS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.zip For example "COMPONENTS_Go The Power_1803.Zip"
Once done, upload them for me to analyze. The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.
  • Click on the Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  • Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  • Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
  • Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

- Your harddisk is failing. The value of SMART attributes &05, &C5 are way too high. Backup your harddrive and replace your harddisk.

To confirm that run GSmartControl

http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/

and tell us how many and which red(ish) lines show up in the "Attributes" tab. I expect at least 2 red lines.

Per Speccy, your hard drive carries a status of "warning", which is usually an indicator that the drive has problems.  I would run the GSmart diagnostic and report, as suggested by Willy.

- Go to the DELL website and download as much system drivers (for sound, touchpad, screen etc.) for your system as possible  Write down what each program does. And back them up on e.g. a USB external HD.

- Do you have a installation disk/files ? You also can go to a computer repair shop. Those folks can re-install Win 7 if you don't have such a disk.

- Backup all your personal data and replace the drive.

Please download and run SeatTool for Windows.

When the website opens scroll down till you find the I Accept button and click on it.

If you scroll down below this button you will find instruction for installing this.

Once you install this program you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for hdds on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB port.

2.  Detected Drives will list the hdd/s found.  Place a check mark in the drive you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  When the scan is complete you will see Test results, post the status.  If it is green it has passed the scan.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

I think it's time for a new hdd.

I would suggest that you call Dell and explain that your hdd has failed and request that they send you the installation and drivers discs.

Do you have all of your important data backed up on removable media?

Just bought a QNAP NAS and will back up everything.  Wife's Laptop, and I had not gotten around to backing her up yet.  Will happen tonight.

I bought this at Staples and created the recommended backup disk when I first set it up, so I am assuming I should have the needed disc to reload a new drive.

I would think it would have the Dell drivers from the install, but just in case I will try to get Dell to send me a driver disk.

I figure since I am going to get a new drive, I might as well get some additional capacity.  I don't think that will be an issue if I am doing a clean install.

Thanks again for your help.

The backup disc is not an installation disc.  You need to get Dell to send you both the installation and drivers discs.

The cable company we use for our ISP was sabotaged Monday night.  This morning I'm finally back online.
