Hello,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS240E laptop running Windows 8 (original OS was Windows Vista, then I upgraded to Windows 7 and then to 8 - dumb mistake).  Anyways, over the past couple of weeks, my laptop has been randomly freezing and it's been showing the "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" message.  I can't think of any new installations or anything, so I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.  I've tried researching online, but there doesn't seem to be a common solution for it, so that's why I'm here.

I have no idea if this error is software, hardware or driver related.  I'd like to pinpoint the issue so my laptop can be reliable.  I don't know where to start or where to start diagnosing, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Josh

Thanks for the reply.

I've ran the Sysnative BSOD Dump + System File Collection App, and attached zip file as requested.

When I tried to run the PERFMON System Health Report, however,I received the following message "Resource and Performance Monitor.  An error occured while attempting to generate the report.  The operator or administrator has refused the request."  This error message is attached as well.

While I'm waiting for a reply, I'll make sure to run the driver verifier, HDD Diagnostics, and RAM test.

Thanks,

Don't worry about the perfmon report just yet.  If we need it, we'll work on getting it to save properly.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version R1020Y3) dates from 2008.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  Please be advised that the system may just be too old for Win8/8.1 (I have a Lenovo laptop that is in the same situation).  If it is incompatible, then the problems will remain no matter what we do.  We'll continue to provide assistance, but it's up to you to decide when to quit.

Let's start by trying to update your Synaptics Touchpad driver to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version.

If there aren't compatible versions at your manufacturer's website, then try the drivers from here (heed the cautions on that page):  http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php

If that doesn't help, then try disabling the touchpad in the BIOS and using an external USB mouse.

If unable to disable it in the BIOS, then disable it in Device Manager and try the external USB mouse.

You have the 2007 version of the Sony Firmware Extension Parser installed.  It's driver (SFEP.sys) is a known BSOD cause.  You must get an update to this from Sony website.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Ok I updated the following as you suggested below:

1) UEFI/BIOS from version R1020Y3 to R1040Y3 (release date 10/27/09)
2) Synaptics Touchpad driver to 19.0.5.0. I also disabled this driver as it seems to be the main culprit. More on this later.
3) Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP.sys) to 8.0.1.6087 (release date of 1/7/09)
4) Ricoh Memory Card Reader driver (rimsptsk.sys) to 6.3.2.20 (release date of 10/5/09)
5) Conexant SoftK56 Modem (VSTAZL3.sys) to 7.62.0.50 (release date of 10/07/09). I'm not sure if this is the specific Conexant SoftK56 driver I installed as there are 2 others.

I was unable to find updated drivers for the following:

1) Conexant SoftK56 Modem driver (VSTCNXT3.sys). This one may have been updated as indicated above, but I'm not sure
2) Conexant SoftK56 Modem driver (VSTDPV3.sys). This one may have been updated as indicated above, but I'm not sure.
3) NetGroup Packet Filter Driver (npf.sys)

I went to the links you provided for these drivers I couldn't find updates for, but it didn't look like there was anything in the links (the "carrona.org" website). Do you have any suggestions to get updated drivers?

Lastly, I've always used a wireless mouse with my laptop and I noticed when I accidently tapped it with my finger, that's when the computer would crash. Therefore, I disabled the driver like you suggested, but it still seems to "crash" when I accidentally tap it when it's disabled. Is there any way to tell if the touchpad is the actual problem that's causing it?

If you would like updated tests run, just let me know.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You stated that the system still crashes when you tap the wireless mouse.

Or is it the touchpad?

Which driver did you disable, and how did you disable it?

The answers to these questions may spark a few more things from me - but basically we're in the "wait and see" mode right now.

Don't worry about the Conexant drivers for the NetGroup driver for now (they aren't usually seen as a BSOD problem).

My apologies for the confusion.  My system crashes when I touch the touchpad.

I disabled the "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad" through Device Manager by right-clicking on this driver, selecting Properties, going to the Driver tab, and selecting "Disable".

If I disabled it incorrectly, or disabled the incorrect driver, please let me know.

Regards,

Now we wait and see what happens.......

It's not easy to do anything with a touchpad (I really, really hate opening up laptops!)

Check in the BIOS to see if you can disable it there (it's a bit better than disabling in Device Manager, but it isn't required in this situation).

I checked the BIOS to see if I could disable the touchpad there...no luck.

I did accidentally tap the touchpad again while trying to access the BIOS the first time and it did crash my computer again.

Any other ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

If it's disabled and it still crashes the system, I'd suggest taking it to a pro to have the case opened and the touchpad replaced.

Good luck!
