Yesterday my son's PC started refusing to connect to the internet. He has both ethernet and wireless, and both systems are fully working on other machines. The error message in Chrome is "DNS probe finished no internet."  Under network settings the ethernet is labeled unidentified, limited and wireless says connected, connection is limited.

I tried to do a system restore but that function is turned off and grayed out so it can't be turned on. Figured he had some kind of infection. AVG didn't show one, Malwarebytes only showed two PUPs. Adwcleaner was clear. Combo fix wouldn't run and Junkware removal tool starts scanning and freezes.

I used the netsh command in admin mode to reset winsock and ip. Winsock reset failed, said the file was missing. ip reset had no effect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

Hi larbabe :)

Are you able to download MiniToolBox on another computer, put it on a USB, get it on your son's computer, run it to get the log and then transfer it back via USB to post it here? We'll get network information about the system with it.

  • Download MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;
  • Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator;
  • Check the following options:
    • Flush DNS;
    • Report IE Proxy Settings;
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings;
    • Report FF Proxy Settings;
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings;
    • List content of Hosts;
    • List IP Configuration;
    • List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;
    • List Installed Programs;
    • List Devices - Only Problems;
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size;

  • Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;
  • Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

Thanks for responding and helping, Aura. I told him there was a response with instructions but he had already started re-installing Windows. Some people's children!!!!!!!!  Thank you for jumping in. I really appreciate it. :)
