Hello - I have posted a new topic here after my posting in 'Am I Infected' could not be resolved (see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579994/frequent-avast-threat-detected-warnings-no-infectionions-found/)

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (Service Pack 1), fully updated. Several weeks ago I downloaded and installed software that resulted in some adware infections (some introduced by the installer despite opting out). The immediate symptoms were attempted browser hijacks (some successful, some blocked by Avast). I cleaned up what I could manually (including uninstalling the original download), but one - Cinem Plus 2.4cV26.05 - could not be removed using 'add/remove' programs. I eventually ran through the malware removal guide listed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/. The tools found a bunch of things (all apparently adware, nothing nasty) and removed them (including Cinem Plus). After three cycles through the malware tools, everything was coming up clean (no reported threats/infections). Hitman Pro flagged one .exe file as suspicious. That .exe file is in my downloads folder, and as it turns out is part of the installer package for the original downloaded software that I believe started this whole problem in the first place (which I still have in my 'Downloads' folder if it needs to be inspected). However, Hitman Pro did not find any threats, and all other malware tools now come up clean.

However, since that time, I get periodic Avast "threat detected" warnings (this happens at least every time I wake my computer up, and at intervals between 30 min and several hours thereafter). Avast appears to be blocking attempts by my computer to connect to a range of websites. Example text from one such warning reads:

Infection blocked

Infection details:

URL: <aitchteeteepee>://bestdriverstar.net/4141/CutterGeneration_142669028246641.dll

Infection: URL:Mal

Process: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

The websites and exact URL are different each time, but the common theme is that they appear to be trying to download a .dll file.

Examples of the URLs are:

This pattern of threats appears to match symptoms described a few months ago (and successfully treated - apparently) on the Avast forums: see

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=169680.0

The tools I have used to date (all run as administrator, and in roughly the order run) are:

Avast full system scans, and boot-time scans

rkill.com

MalwareBytes Anti Malware

ADWCleaner

Junkware Removal Tool

TDSSKiller.exe

Hitman Pro (trial version - no threats found so I did not need to start a 30 day trial)

Roguekiller

CCleaner

Minitoolbox

ESET Online Scanner

So - to sum up - I downloaded and installed a dodgy file and either that file, or the installer, infected me with a bunch of adware. I successfully removed apparently everything, all malware and junkware and antivirus tools are coming up clean, but I am STILL getting Avast warnings about attempts by my computer to contact dodgy websites to download a .dll. It looks like I still have stealthy infection somewhere on my system but I don't know what or where.

Below is my FRST Log, and attached is the 'Additional' file. Note - in these logs, I have substituted <name> for personal information, but if needed I can provide this.

Quote from MidnightShadow (Messenger conversation - reposted here)

Dancing_Bear,

I am new, so unable to reply to the thread. Anyhow, this feels very familiar.

If any of these symptoms exist:

- Several instances of dllhost.exe are running
- A random blank window pops up. Window title starts with: javascript:\..\mshtml,RunHTMLApplication ";eval . . .
- MBAM produces constant warnings that a malicious dllhost.exe is attempting to connect to a malicious website
- Null registry data may reside in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}\localserver32
- Nnull registry data may reside in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- Most anti-malware software and removal tools find no malware infections to remove
- Event viewer throws a DCOM error to CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}
- Internet Explorer Security Zones keep changing on their own
- Internet Explorer Protected Mode cannot be enabled
- Internet Explorer cannot download files

Then you may have a Poweliks infection. You can clear it up one of a few ways.

1- (Easiest and fastest) Automated solution -
MBAM: Download and run MBAR (Malware Bytes Anti Rootkit), which should remove the infection and any related registry keys.

Symantec:
- Download and run the appropriate tool for the architecture of the computer you're on (gslink.us/symantecpoweliks64 or (gslink.us/symantecpoweliks32)
- Download RegDelNull from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897448.aspx
- Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command: regdelnull -s hkcu
- Open regedit and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}\localserver32
- If you get an error, the key was not removed properly. If there is no error when trying to open the key, the infection should be removed.

Automated tools may not work for every infection. If you still experience symptoms, let me know. Keep me posted!

Hi MidnightShadow - thank you for your message. I appreciate your reply and your assistance. I am reposting your message here so that it is visible to the rest of the forum. I note that the rules for this topic state that "Only members of the Malware Response Team or Moderators are allowed to help people with logs". Since you are new, I would appreciate some input from one of the official Malware Response Team to endorse your status. Nevertheless, in good faith, I will follow your advice - as best as I am able. Some of your suggestions assume a level of familiarity with the deeper workings of Windows 7 that, unfortunately, I don't have.

Regarding the first part of your message - the symptoms I am experiencing do not generally accord with the list you have posted.

- Several instances of dllhost.exe are running

In Task Manager, under 'processes', I don't see any instances of dllhost.exe running. Am I looking in the wrong place?

- A random blank window pops up. Window title starts with: javascript:\..\mshtml,RunHTMLApplication ";eval . . .

I have not experienced this symptom

- MBAM produces constant warnings that a malicious dllhost.exe is attempting to connect to a malicious website

I am not running MBAM in the background - only the free version run as an independently executed malware tool. However, scan for rootkits is enabled, and MBAM is not detecting any threats (last scan run 5 minutes ago).

- Null registry data may reside in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}\localserver32

I am a little out of my depth here, but I opened regedit and navigated to \CLSID\ but I have no entry under '{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}'.

- Nnull registry data may reside in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The entries I have at this location are:

(Default)   REG_SZ   (value not set)

CCleaner Monitoring   REG_SZ   "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe /MONITOR

Dropbox Update  REG_SZ  "C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Dropbox\Update\DropboxUpdate.exe" /c

Google Update  REG_SZ "C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

Power2GoExpress  REG_SZ  NA

The last entry is potentially suspicious (why would it show 'NA'?). I do have Cyberlink Power2GoExpress software installed, so this might be a legitimate entry.

- Most anti-malware software and removal tools find no malware infections to remove

OK. I experience this symptom, but that isn't necessarily diagnostic.

- Event viewer throws a DCOM error to CLSID\{AB8902B4-09CA-4bb6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}

I am not familiar with Event Viewer, but when I open it and check, I do not see any error associated with this address.

- Internet Explorer Security Zones keep changing on their own

I do not use IE as my browser, so I don't know if this occurs.

- Internet Explorer Protected Mode cannot be enabled

IE Protected Mode is enabled.

- Internet Explorer cannot download files

I am able to download files with IE.

Given the fact that the symptoms you describe do not match what I am experiencing, I am not confident that I have the infection you describe. Nevertheless, I will try running MBAR (Beta) and I will post the results in my next post.

Thank you again for your help.

After doing a bit of online research to try to verify that "symantecpoweliks64" is a legitimate program, I attempted to download it. At the moment I initiated the download of gslink.us/symantecpoweliks64, Avast blocked a 'Suspicious Item'. Virus chest now contains: the following entry:

VgqJUWCS.exe.part   (original location) C:\USERS\<name>\Local\TEMP

OK. I don't know what is happening here. I won't do anything more without some guideance, because that Avast warning has me rattled. Please can someone advise?

For what it is worth, I downloaded the ESET Poweliks Cleaner from the ESET site (after checking it on Norton Safeweb), and it found nothing on my system. Incidentally, MidnightShadow has decided to step back and I will await assistance from one of the official malware team. I thank him/her for their input, which I believe was well intentioned.

Hi,

this has nothing to do with Poweliks. The inputs by this other member were well intentioned for sure - but useless nonetheless.
I suspect that these are adware BITS jobs that fail to complete and therefor remain in the system.

Let's check:

Please download this attached Attached File  fixlist.txt   113bytes   35 downloads and save it in the same directory as FRST.
  • Start FRST with Administrator privileges.
  • Press the Fix button.
  • When finished, a log file (Fixlog.txt) pops up and is saved to the same location the tool was run from.
Please copy and paste its contents in your next reply.

Do the warnings and blocks from avast still appear now?

Thank you Aharonov, it looks like the Avast warnings have stopped. I have tried waking my computer from sleep several times (this was when the warnings would reliably occur), and I have tried rebooting, and no longer get any warnings. I would appreciate if you could keep the topic open for a few days so I can test my computer a bit more, but for now it all looks OK.

Could I ask a question though: the warnings were for attempts by my computer to contact a series of URLs, but the URL was different each time. This suggests that there was a program running on my computer generating some kind of systematically changing URL. Is this what was removed with the FRST fix list? If so, do you have any more information about what the malware program was so I can research the damage/security risk it might have caused?

Thank you!

Yes for sure I'll leave this topic open until you report back that everyting is OK on your side.
Let me add that I'm pretty confident that we identified and eradicated the cause. See below.

the warnings were for attempts by my computer to contact a series of URLs, but the URL was different each time. This suggests that there was a program running on my computer generating some kind of systematically changing URL.

This is a very reasonable assumption indeed. However (fortunately) it doesn't hold in this case.
Let me try to explain briefly what was going on here:

You've "installed" some adware that registered a BITS job to download additional files (this is quite en vogue for adware nowadays). You then were able to clean up this adware except for this BITS job.
In the last FRST fix we read out all pending BITS jobs using the bitsadmin tool. And these are the parameters from the adware job that was found: (the other BITS jobs were legit)
Spoiler

BITS (running withing an instance of svchost.exe) periodically tries to contact the URL that is given as parameter and download the file that is offered to the computer. If this succeeds the BITS job completes. Otherwise it tries again some time later. In this case you can see that there were a whole lot of unsuccessful tries ("ERROR COUNT: 203"). Why? Because avast stepped in all the time and blocked the connection.
Now where were these changing URLs coming from? Easy. The URL that is registered in the BITS job (takesuperoptimizerutils.com/uninstall/?key=tok79..*snip*..) just redirects to a different URL each time. To conclusively demostrate that I've just visited it a couple of times and it redirected me to download a dll at a different address each time. This is what I got:
Spoiler

We've killed this BITS job in the last fix so it's expected that there aren't any more tries to download this dll.

do you have any more information about what the malware program was so I can research the damage/security risk it might have caused?do you have any more information about what the malware program was so I can research the damage/security risk it might have caused?

As said, this was just a small remainder of the adware you've already cleaned (cf. the "CREATION TIME" of this BITS job: 5/26/2015 7:01:29 PM). So there is no additional damage/security risk. I also uploaded the dlls that so desperately wanted to live on your computer to Virustotal and it clearly shows adware (Multiplug familiy as it seems).
