Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download a Windows 98 boot disk.

Go into DOS and delete the files that you're concerned about. Then, use the Format utility to format the drive and then the Fdisk utility to remove the partitions.

Also, there's a free tool available here: http://www.pcinspector.de that may also help you out.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

If you have access to another computer, take it out, install it as a slave, format it and put it back in.
Spike's advice: Backup your data routinely.

if you know where all the personal files you want to delete are you can use one of these utilities http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/collectio...lid,1231,00.asp
this should save you the trouble of a reformat and if you are going to pass this pc on to someone else it will save them a little trouble too.

a lot of those are free or shareware so you can just use them without having to buy any new sw.
