Hi,

I caught something that keeps producing fake (?) warning messages about Hoax.Win32.Renos.dw. It keeps coming back until I kill my F-seucre processes.. Havre tried all the usual tools (Ad-aware, Spybot, Ewido, and half a dozen more), but nothing helps.

Here is my HJT log:

Thanks tea,

Yes, my laptop is still haunted. I'm away on vacation, however, and don't have it with me, so I can't do anything about it until after 19th of august. If the topic is still open by that time, I'll reply again. If not, I'll start another topic at that time.

Best regards,
olsb

Thank you for keeping the thread open!

The computer has recovered somewhat, after the latest update of F-secure, but is still behaving a bit strangely whenever I log on (producing a weird error message about a missing file that it is apparently trying to open). Here is a fresh HJT log:

Hey, you're back! You're welcome, and I hope you had a great vacation! :flowers:

A couple of things first:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\PROGRA~1\1CREPE~1\bin\RepAPP.dll

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

You should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally. Reboot when you're finished and run a scan. Let it fix what it finds.

Regards,
tea

Hi again and thanks! Hope you also enjoyed the summer!

I ran the virus scan, but it found nothing. (It says "Status: OK" and the result "found nothing" for every single tool). I have nevertheless removed the suspected software, since I wasn't using it anymore.

I'm sorry for a dumb question, but I'm not really sure which is the second antivirus software I'm running? I want to keep F-secure, but I'm not sure if the second one is ewido or Spybot TeaTimer (or maybe I should remove both of those?).

Thanks for the kind help. Should I post a new log?

/olsb

Hi there,

It's not a dumb question! I see traces of Symantec/Norton in your log, as well as F-Secure.

Yes, please let em see a new log. How is it running?

Thanks,

Ok, now I get it. I didn't think of the Symantec software as an anti-virus software, since I thought it was only doing backups. Does it have anti-virus functionality as well?

Everything seems to be running normallly now, and the log-in error messages have disappeared. Below is a new log anyway - let me know if you see anything suspicious! And thanks a million for all help!! :flowers:

Hello,

The entries in your log are related to Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. As long as Symantec it isn't competing with F-Secure with real time protection, then it's all right. I just have to make sure that you're aware. :flowers:

Your log looks clean!

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, or Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
