I got a virus that causes me to be unable to open files.  The virus page originally said to call a specific telephone number for a code to unlock the files.  I was able to stop that page from running.  When attempting to open a file I get the error message listed in the topic above  I see that I should not have run combo fix but had already done so. I am using Open Office.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps in the order listed.
===

You have been infected by a Ransomware malware and possibly all of your files have been encrypted.

One example of such infection is explained here.
You may not have the same one.

CryptoWall and HELP_DECRYPT Ransomware Information Guide
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/cryptowall-ransomware-information

Other than paying the ransom if it's not too late there is nothing we can do to restore your files.
I know one thing I would not trust them, your call.
===

If you want us to clean what has been left over the the infections please run these tools and submit the logs for my review.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click the Scan button and wait for the process to complete.
  • Click the Report button and the report will open in Notepad.
IMPORTANT
  • If you click the Clean button all items listed in the report will be removed.
If you find some false positive items or programs that you wish to keep, Close the AdwCleaner windows.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click the Scan button and wait for the process to complete.
  • Check off the element(s) you wish to keep.
  • Click on the Clean button follow the prompts.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number).

Thanks nasdaq.  Will run AdwCleaner.  Will send report.  Also, I have a thumb drive that had most of my files but get the same message when trying to open files from it.  Please advise further... lamayhew

Run the AdwCleaner tool and when the scan is completed click the Clean button.

A log will be save in your C:\ drive such as C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt where sn is a number.
===

Also, I have a thumb drive that had most of my files but get the same message when trying to open files from it. Please advise further... lamayhew

If that thumb drive was connected when you got infected the files in your thumb drives are also damaged.

Temporarily disable your AV program so it does not interfere.
Info on how to disable your security applications How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs - Security Mini-Guides.

Download Zeok tool from here

When the download appears, save to the Desktop.
On the Desktop, right-click the Zoek.exe file and select: Run as Administrator
(Give it a few seconds to appear.)

Next, copy/paste the entire script inside the code box below to the input field of Zoek:
createsrpoint;
autoclean;
emptyalltemp;
ipconfig /flushdns;b
Now...
Close any open Browsers.
Click the Run script button, and wait. It takes a few minutes to run all the script.

When the tool finishes, the zoek-results.log is opened in Notepad.
The log is also found on the systemdrive, normally C:\
If a reboot is needed, the log is opened after the reboot.

Please attach the zoek-results.log in your reply.

Also, please provide an update on how the computer is behaving after running the above script.

How is the computer running now?

Computer appears to be operating normally.  But, still cannot open files saved on computer or saved on thumb.  Thumb was not plugged in at time of virus attack.

What type of file is it?

Create an other similar file and save it.

Can you open it?

I have Open Office on my computer and just realized I cannot open it to attempt a new file.  Reinstall?

Yes.

You may get some unwanted programs with the installer.

When complete run the AdwCleaner and clean everything that will be found.

Uninstalled Open Office, rebooted and reinstalled Open Office.  I can now open all files!!!!  Other things to do with eliminating remnants of this issue?
