Hey guys, I need to run Silverlight to see my paystubs.  I have installed and run it in the past in my linux machine, but, I want to be as secure as possible and have read that it is a security threat.  I really like the security Linux provides me and have spent many hours learning about keeping it this way.  What is my best way to get this function without installing on main pc.

I don't have access to a windows OS(which is more compatible with Silverlight) for a Virtual Machine, so I was thinking that I could do this with a linux VM, am I right in thinking I can do this to avoid a security risk and install silverlight in VM?

If so, I should probably run a light distro with my measly 4gb of RAM and a 32bit system also.  I'm thinking Mint13KDE as it will be familiar to me as my main pc has LMKDE17.1.  I really won't need to do to much with this but download some PDF's.

Thanks pcpunk

pcpunk, maybe this article can assist you, it's not called Silverlight, rather Pipelight, yet performs the same function. All you need to do is enter 5 Terminal lines, they're on the first page.

http://www.itworld.com/article/2697813/install-silverlight-alternative-pipelight-in-ubuntu-14-04.html

For those who doesn't care to read the article, the commands for Pipelight, also needed for other software, as as follows.

Open a Terminal window & copy/paste the following code & Enter after each:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install pipelight

sudo pipelight-plugin --update

sudo pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight

That's it! :thumbup2:

Had a problem, it stalled out on me here: sudo apt-get install pipelight, or at least it seems as though it stalled.  There seemed to be no activity for a while and could not get this Agreement to leave the terminal.

2po1vs2.png

I then tried to move forward and run sudo "sudo pipelight-plugin --update" when that did not work I did sudo apt-get install pipelight again and got these errors:

chris@chris-Aspire-3000 ~ $ sudo pipelight-plugin --update
[sudo] password for chris:
sudo: pipelight-plugin: command not found

chris@chris-Aspire-3000 ~ $ sudo apt-get install pipelight
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
chris@chris-Aspire-3000 ~ $

Now a process is still running and can't do anything in the terminal.

Tried to reinstall again and got the same error, don't know how to stop it.

I now tried to uninstall to start over.  Don't think I should be having all these issues with this so something somewhere is wrong.  Maybe I should have let that Terminal screen go longer.  There was no activity though, not even a flicker on my HDD light.

sudo apt-get remove pipelight
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

So sad, I need to do this.  Maybe I should try it on my main pc?

sudo lsof | grep /var/lib/dpkg
...might tell you which process is using the directory.

Now that I have all this installed, my work site which connects me to ehub keeps redirecting me to install Silverlight, then to moonlight here: http://www.mono-project.com/docs/web/moonlight/

Yes, but now am having another issue, do you have time to help.  I did a lot of the leg work I can link you to it, need to edit a file from what I have read but don't know how to do it.  Along with changing some Apparmor profiles, which I have already done.

I went to about:plugins because of something I read, and found this.

Pipelight Error (silverlight5.1)!

File: libpipelight-silverlight5.1.so Path: /usr/lib/pipelight/libpipelight-silverlight5.1.so Version: 0.0 State: Enabled Something went wrong, check the terminal output   application/x-pipelight-error-silverlight5.1 Error during initialization pipelighterror-silverlight5.1

That led me to this site which peaked my interest at post #10:  https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+question/251075#yui_3_10_3_1_1418479596890_263

Then trying to follow the directions in post #12 the first link.

Here is the test that I did from the second link:

Pipelight diagnostic: Please select the Plugin you want to test:
User agent (Javascript)
Checking for Windows user agent ...failed
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/38.0

Silverlight (as seen by a website)
Checking for Silverlight ...okay
Version: 5.1.40416.0

Result
Result from all tests ...failed
You need to fix your user agent by installing a user agent switcher
