Hi all! Hoping someone will have an idea about what to do about the following... for a month or so now, about 25% of the time that I try to start up my computer after powering down or putting it to sleep, it will hang and refuse to start. The screen stays black and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. Obviously, when this happens, I'm forced to pull the plug on the computer and reboot. I'm worried that continually doing this will damage the hard drive or something else. Any ideas about what could be causing this? The PC works fine otherwise. Is it a hard drive problem? Maybe the Windows installation is corrupted somehow? Hoping there's an easy fix.

Thanks for any help.

Hello mday63 and Welcome.

Obviously, when this happens, I'm forced to pull the plug on the computer and reboot. I'm worried that continually doing this will damage the hard drive

At the moment (without more information) I fail to see how this can "damage the hard drive".. ??

My laptop has never been "put to sleep or hibernates".-  I always "Turn It Off" each time that I have finished with it, whether it is on Power, or Battery operations.

This way I feel safer , and feel that my battery will not run out if I do not use it for several days...

Following that, I press the On button when I wish to use it next time. Some times it may be turned on and off several times in one day..

There are people who say it may reduce the time that the battery lasts, but after several years, I find this is not correct, as I have the same battery life as when I purchased it..

I run regular checks on it, and run Antivirus / Antimalware programs when required, and I have not noted the Hard Drive to slow or change in any way.

When you notice this change, I would be interested to investigate your Operating System as required -

Thank you for your interest and care of your system -

Please post back if you still have concerns..We  are always willing to look further for you..

Okay... what I'm saying is that I actually have to pull the power cord out of the PC to get it to shut down. I'm not talking about going to Start->Shut Down and then rebooting. This doesn't seem like the best thing to be doing to the computer on a daily basis, so I'm looking to solve the problem with it locking up on startup or after it's put to sleep.

OK. Now I understand a bit better, but this should not happen.

what I'm saying is that I actually have to pull the power cord out of the PC to get it to shut down.

This part is very odd, as "pulling the cord" should have no effect on the Operating System of a laptop if you have already hit the Shut Down button.

The problem being that many people do not carry a "Power Cord" while using a laptop, as they are designed to be portable ..

The "Shut Down" button should do what you want because your laptop is capable of running off the battery for 2 or 3 hours (on average) while you type or fill in forms or even doing light browsing.

Are you able to just run off battery, or is this a worse problem  ??

When you hit (Click) the Square button that gives you a menu, there should be a long box for Shut Down, and this is what I use, but there is also a square at the end that should list (from the bottom) Hibernate, Sleep, then a line divides Restart, and another line with Lock (means you lock the system), Log off (means your not shutting down, but off to do other work, or Sleeping), and then Switch User (obvious if you have several users).

Again, I will add that my computers are "Shut Down" often several times every day with no problems showing. The usual "damage to Hard Drive" occurs if the laptop is dropped or mistreated in that way, or if you overload your system and that may cause Overheating problems, which is the worse problem.

Do you have Speccy (from Piriform) installed as this may give us a readout of any damage ?? Or follow the directions below and we can look at it...

Please, Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next reply.

Thank You -

Thanks for your response. Maybe it wasn't clear what I was saying in my first post, so again, I have to forcibly shut the computer down because it hangs on startup or when I try to make it "wake up" after it's been sleeping. The problem I'm concerned about is that it is not good for the computer to constantly be forcibly powered off by removing the power cord. There's no way to access any normal method of shutting it down when it is locked up. Also, this is a desktop rather than a laptop. What I am doing is equivalent to pulling out the power cord and the battery on a laptop to force it to turn off. I'm not worried that normally shutting down the computer will cause damage and I know how to access the shutdown options when the computer is running properly. I hope all this is clear. Below is the screenshot from Speccy. Still hoping someone can help me figure this out!

Windows hanging on startup is a common complaint and usually caused by a third party software/driver, hanging services (sometimes related to installed security software), group policies or connecting network drives.

Can you re-run Speccy, and follow all of the directions so we can actually see the items. It may take a few minutes to fully load then follow the written directions.

Next -

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

As quietman7 said, it may also be due to problem programs

Thank You -

Ah, I see, I hadn't read through the full thread on Speccy. Here's all the info you asked for. Thanks for trying to help. Hopefully we can get somewhere with this now! If nothing else, I may just go ahead and do a fresh install of Windows, but honestly I'm dreading that.

Ad-Aware Antivirus is not the "better" program that I would ever tell anyone to use, and there are many better (including the built in Defender) at the moment

I am reading that you do quite a bit of work with the system, and you may deal in English and Japanese ?? so that is using a bit more memory than usual.

The items do show up to 70% memory used, but I am still looking for a reason why it will not shut down as normal.

Error: (06/16/2015 05:37:23 PM) (Source: disk) (User: )
Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

As your main system error is not good, but I have not finished with the other problems to find the quickest way around it yet.

RAM Memory slots
Total memory slots: 2
Used memory slots: 1
Free memory slots: 1 << You could add another stick of RAM, as memory is now running low (70% used). I would say to add another stick of RAM and you will notice a great change.

Below are some general HDD items that all look very good.
S.M.A.R.T
Status: Good
Temperature: 42 °C
Temperature Range: OK (less than 50 °C)
S.M.A.R.T attributes << All seem to look good (a few important ones are listed below)

Real value: 6125 ms << A bit high, but nothing to worry about yet.
Current: 137
Worst: 128

04 - Attribute name: Start/Stop Count
Real value: 1,032
Current: 99
Worst: 99

Raw Value: 0000000408

Attribute name: Reallocated Sectors Count
Real value: 0 << Very good as the HDD will move sectors if there are problems
Current: 200
Worst: 200
Threshold: 140
Raw Value: 0000000000

I am not a Hardware specialist, but the items I list above could show a great improvement to start with...

Is that OK for a brief look, and I will check your errors soon.

License Activation (slui.exe) failed with the following error code:

hr=0x8007251D
Sorry to bother you , but was this an upgrade from Windows  7 or Vista ??
I only ask because it is throwing another error and that this error message can pop up when you have installed a newer version of Windows on an existing system.
When you do this, you need to register the newer version each time and you have a code with your install that needs registering ..

Again back to Memory space, There is room for your system to easily take another stick if RAM

Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 72 % << This would lead to slow start ups when you first hit the button. I upped mine to 16 GB (still small but much better than yours)
Total Physical: 3.48 GB
Available Physical: 973 MB
Total Virtual: 5.23 GB
Available Virtual: 2.09 GB

The errors do seem to show that it was a System Upgrade ?? around Christmas time (not re-registered) ??, and overuse of your small memory - - -

EDIT - And this seems to show your AdAware is performing badly >>>  Description: Code Integrity determined that a process (\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe) attempted to load \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE15\MSOXMLMF.DLL that did not meet the Custom 3 / Antimalware signing level requirements.

These minor problems together are building up quickly, and can lead to HDD problems -

Thank You -

Okay, so it sounds like adding RAM could improve the performance of the system... I still suspect there's something going on in the background that's causing this issue but I'll probably try a reinstall of Windows first to see if that fixes anything. Thanks for taking a detailed look through the logs.
