I have been working with nasdaq on the virus board but have come up short of figuring this out. he recommended I post here.

The computer will boot ok but when you go to try to get on the internet all browsers crash. Went to try to check the firewall and defender, firewall was down and defender was off.started to try to use MBAM and it crashes with runtime error. Went to use the recovery partition to reload, windows says it isn't there and can't see it at the list of drives. Went into defrag and the drive is listed there.   This is when i turned to BC. We ran minitoolbox first. Then we ran ADW Cleaner scan then tried to run JRT but it failed. tried to run MBAM again and it failed same as before. tried to run ESET but it never sees the internet that is connected or at least shows that it is. We then ran ADW Cleaner Clean, but same problems persisted. Ran FixExec but it showed that my operating system was unknown and not supported. I'm running Win 8.1 x64.

I can access the advanced tools area but when I click to use recovery or reset it say drive isn't there.

Can you create a Recovery Drive from within Windows? Then use the USB flash drive to do the reset or refresh. If you do a refresh you will lose all you installed programs other than your apps. With a reset you will lose everything.

Hmmm, not a nice situation.

First, please provide these reports:

- Even though you're not reporting BSOD's, please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

- Please do the following:

- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Let's try this (in this order):

- DISM/SFC.EXE

- System Restore

- Refresh

- Reset

Here's the instructions for DISM/SFC.EXE:

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt).  Press Enter after each one:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.
