i just got my dell e310 yesterday and i got information on my old harddrive.

now this dell has SATA and my old one connected with IDE.

i was able to take out a dvd IDE and Power cord and connect it to the hard drive. the HD is now a slave for now.

My user name is password protected. when i try to get in, it says 'access is denied'.

now i think i need to set that old hard drive has the Master to log in under my name and retrieve the files.

please help.

If you still have the complete old computer connect them thru ethernet and drag and drop your old file to the new computer. You will not like what is going to happen when you make the old drive MASTER on the new system. There will be all kinds of conflict. It you have a router, networking them will be the best option. If you don't a $10 crossover cable from Walmart will do nicely.

Search google for "taking ownership of files" and for "access denied error messages". This will help you get access to the files.

BTW - thanks for the tip about the DVD/hard drive swap - I've been looking for info about this for a month now!
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
