Hi, have had a virus popping up on my computer for the past week: Trojan Horse Generic WUE and also Trojan Horse Dialer BZB. Have tried loads of different scans and ant-spyware soft ware but I cant get rid of it. Need your help please. All my computer knowledge is self-taught, I am fairly computerate literate and can follow instructions but you might need to simply for me a little please. I have followed all the steps, my firewall is in place, my anti-spyware is up to date, I have stinger, nortons, no-adaware and ewido on my computer presently. My internet connection is broadband. My operating system is windows xp professional, even though my computer is only for home use. I would really appreciate your help on this one thanks.

Heya dee_act,

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or Norton - if you remove Norton please understand you will have to install a new firewall as the mcafee one will have been uninstalled also.

* Open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • List all minor sections(Full)
  • List Empty Sections(Complete)
Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here
David

Hey there Deirdre,

It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

Firsty, please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

*Boot into Safe Mode (without networking support!)
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inside five poke link] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\error draw inside five\Balm copy.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Inside Bone] C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\APPLIC~1\UPLOAD~1\info third.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

Please delete the following two folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\error draw inside five

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\UPLOAD~1 <--Windows abbeviates long file/folder names. This folder's name begins with UPLOAD and will sound like random words strung together. If there is more than one folder beginning with those letters, don't delete but write down the exact names and post them back here. It contains the file info third.exe

Please reboot back to normal mode and download Findlop by Metallica. Unzip it to your desktop.
Double click findlop.bat. It will open a notepad file.
Copy the content of that file and paste it here in your reply.

David

sorry just saw it now. Jesus I'm finding this site really hard to navigate!! I sent you more info but its not showing up. I edited my reply but I obviously did it wrong. Anyway the gist of what I said was that since I last posted I got rid of Nortons and bought the McAfee Suite and that seems to have deleted the file you told me to make a note of ( the one in documents and settings\administrator\application data) Will I still go ahead with the instructions you gave me? Sorry for being a pain in the a*** but I don't have anyone else I can ask these questions. I dont use computers in my job, so all my knowledge has been aquired by trial and error and hit and miss!!

Don't worry Deirdre,
If you have any questions about the process, just ask.

To download Findlop, just click on the hyperlink.
Eg, just click on the words below:

That's great, we've deleted the LOP infection.
By the way, HJT means "hijackthis"

Please post back with a fresh HJT log.

Hi David, just wanted to say thanks for all your help. Left you a donation, sorry it couldn't be more but I'm a mature student who gave up work to go back to college and I'm kinda skint at the moment!
All the best.
Dee

Hey Dee.

Thanks for the very kind donation
I've tried to make the following instructions as user friendly as possible -
If you need help with a certain step don't hesitate to ask at all.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or Mcafee - if you remove Mcafee please understand you will have to install a new firewall as the mcafee one will have been uninstalled also.

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
* Your Java is out of date and the older versions are being exploited by malware. It is the likely cause of your infection, so we need to get it patched up as soon as possible.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Also, we must disable the monitoring by MSAS or it can interfere with registry changes that HijackThis makes.
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [It's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye.].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E99421FB-68DD-40F0-B4AC-B7027CAE2F1A} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inside five poke link] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\error draw inside five\Balm copy.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cfgmngr32 - C:\WINDOWS\g996542.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winyha32 - winyha32.dll (file missing)

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\error draw inside five <--This folder will contain the file "Balm copy.exe".
Let me know if you can't find or delete this folder (important)!

Now please reboot back to normal mode and post a new Hijackthis log.
David
