I tried following Microsoft instructions to edit the registry. It said to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU. The problem is my registry doesn't have a (WindowsUpdate\AU) How can I fix that. Can I just type it in?

Yes I know. But this is a friends computer and I know he hasn't kept it updated. I was told that I can get it to pick up the old updates.

Does it have service pack 3 installed ?

If not you need to download it manually then you will receive automatic updates until the well last update of Windows XP.

I am in the process of installing SP3 right now. It has gotten to cleanup and it is dragging along. Of course that is not on this computer.I will let you know how it turns out.

williamp, i am using windows xpsp3 and i don't have the regkey that you mentioned on my computer.. i think you should just forget about that regkey..

go into windows "services" and make sure that the "automatic updates" service and the "background intelligent transfer service" are enabled.. both of those "services" have to be enabled in order for windows automatic updates to work, and for being able to use the "microsoft update" website to install windows updates..

p.s. now that i see that you are installing "win xpsp3" on the computer, i assume that you will have to install a lot of additional windows updates, after that..

I now have SP3 but it still won't scan for updates on Windows Update site. Automatic updates are turned on. How do I enable the background intelligent transfer service? By the way my computer has XP and that Reg.Key is on mine.

I think you need to install the Windows Update Agent. I had the same problem on a clean install of XP.

After installing, reboot and see if you can access Windows Updates.

I downloaded and tried to install the link. It told me I didn't need it because I already have it.

Sorry, I used shorthand. It is called background intelligent transfer service. See post #6 by redwolfe_98.
