Hi guys, firstly I'll just say I've been using this site for several years now to help me out and have found it very useful.  I have posted this in the Windows 7 forum as it seems to be a problem specific to this OS.  Sorry if it should be somewhere else.

About three months back I built a new system based on Windows 7 Pro x64.  It has been generally excellent, apart from a persistent but unpredictable loss of internet.

I first noticed it after a few days when I would randomly lose connection to online games.  I just put it down to a bad server or ISP dropping my connection, but notably other Internet devices in my house did not appear to be suffering.

Once I was kicked back to my desktop and saw that the Windows network icon on the taskbar had a yellow exclamation mark, as soon as I saw it it disappeared and my internet connection was fine again.

Since then it has recurred many times but the pattern is not predictable in any way.  Sometimes it will be a week, but I haven't been gaming as much recently and I guess it's less noticeable when browsing.  Typically I'll be browsing and notice that the page isn't loading, then I'll see the yellow exclamation mark.  Usually if I just leave it 30 seconds or so it sorts itself out.  On one occasion it didn't, but disabling and enabling the network adapter did the trick.

Things I have tried:

3x NICs (onboard PCIE Realtek LAN, PCI Realtek LAN card, and Intel PCI LAN card)

Uninstalling Bonjour service

Removing IPV6 using Microsoft Fix It app

Flushing DNS cache

I have checked the event viewer and there are many DNS Client Events 1014 errors, going right back to when I built the system.  I have only just discovered this, but from memory I can associate a few of the dates and times to events where I lost internet.

If anyone can help me out here this would be great because it's driving me nuts and I would hate to have to go back to Vista for some crappy issue like this.

Thank you :)

Look at the suggested resolutions suggested by Microsoft TechNet, there are three.

Please note that the first  suggestion involves editing the registry.  If mistakes are made while doing this it could render the computer inoperable.  For this reason you should back up your registry to that it can be restored to the condition before making the edit.

To backup the registry please down load and install Tweaking.com Registry Backup.

Play the video below for operating instructions.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Thanks for the reply dc3 but unfortunately your Microsoft link just loops back to this thread.  I will try to find it myself anyway :)

One more thing - the thread title and first post refer to 'errors' in the event log but I actually meant 'warnings'.

Edit:  It isn't necessary to quote the posts.  There are logs which when wrapped in code or quotes make it harder to read.

Ok no worries no more quoting.

I forgot to say, I had already tried disabling receive side scaling (as in the Microsoft article) but not the other features too.  I've just done as the guide suggested.

TCP/IPV6 is already disabled and not really sure about spanning tree portfast, my router is a Dlink DIR-655 connected to my ISP's own router with the WAN side set as default DMZ.

Hi, just another quick update.

No problems at all with internet or any 1014 warnings showing up in the Event Viewer for about 96 hours.  Then just an hour or so ago, I was browsing the internet and it hung loading a Youtube page.  I checked the Event Viewer and there were three 1014 warnings all within a few seconds of each other.

I tried disabling/re-enabling the adapter but I still had the yellow exclamation mark and no internet access, I also pulled the ethernet cable and no joy.

I brought up a command prompt and tried pinging both the domain name and WAN IP of website in my country, both timed out.  I pinged my router and modem LAN IPs and both were fine.  I opened up the web GUI for both in Firefox and could view both no problems.  During this my son was playing on Xbox Live with no issues.

Then I remembered, just a minute or so before the internet dropped out I plugged my iphone 4S into my computer via USB to charge as I had less than 20% battery.  I picked the phone up (still connected) and refreshed my email over WiFi, and immediately my internet on my computer was was restored.

Is this just a coincidence or could I be on to something?  I'm trying to figure out if my iphone was connected during the other times I had loss of internet and 1014 warnings, I know for a fact four days is quite a long time for it to go with no issue and I have only been charging my iphone via the mains over the past few days except this one time.

Edit - 28 mins later:

Ok so I'm sure now it's something to do with my iphone.  I connected it again to USB as a test, and started browsing.  I clicked a HTTP link in a webpage and it hung, checked the Event Viewer and there is a 1014 warning.  Then the yellow exclamation mark appears.  I tried a few more web pages, no joy.  Unlocked the phone with pin code, started browsing on it via WiFi and straight away internet on my computer is restored!
