Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here.

Panasonic CF-W8 laptop, 3 years old, never had any previous issues. It was fine when I left the house today, but when I came back a few hours later, the screen was black and had text I didn't understand. I rebooted, and it said that Hal.dll was missing.

So I looked online to see how to fix it, but when I rebooted again, the screen simply turned black and stayed black after the initial boot-up. When I check the BIOS, it says "Hard Disk Empty." I tried using the Windows recovery CD, but it says that there's no hard disk.

Does this mean that the hard disk failed? If so, what are the options to get my data? Before shelling out the big bucks for data recovery services, I'd like to see if there's anything else I can do.

Thank you in advance for any help!

It may be that the hard disk has failed.

Please try these free, bootable hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

If it's a UEFI system (mostly for WIn8 and later systems), you may have to disable SecureBoot and enable CSM/legacy in order to boot form the disks.

To see if you can recover your data, try slaving it to another computer to copy the data off of it.

If that doesn't work, then we can try data recovery tools before suggesting a data recovery service.

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
