Hello,

I downloaded a program (Audacity) from there and cannot remove it. Is this harmful to my computer?

Hi NikolaTesla :)

Audacity is a legitimate program, so you can uninstall it without any worries. What happens when you try to uninstall it? On a side note, Source Forge is now offering bundling installers for programs where their author authorized it (via an opt-in option), so other programs (mostly PUPs) might have been installed on your system when you installed Audacity without your knowledge.

Audacity is a free multi-track audio editor/recorder.

The correct way to remove most programs is from within its program group Uninstall shortcut in Start Menu > All Programs or by using Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) in Control Panel, so always check there first. In most cases, using the uninstaller of the software not only removes it more effectively, but it also restores many changed configuration settings. Important! Reboot when done and delete the Program folder if it still exists.

Alternatively, you can use a third-party utility like Revo Uninstaller Free or Portable and follow these instructions for using it. Revo provides a listing of all installed software by installation date and when removing a program, Revo does a more comprehensive job of searching for and removing related registry entries, files and folders.

I forgot to ask...why do you want to remove it?

I want to keep Audacity but it will not open and I have found out since that Source Forge is Sketchy. I I figured the Audacity I downloaded was probably bogus. What made me even more suspicious is it will not open and it cannot be deleted.

The download was not bogus but could have been corrupted. Remove it as directed above and try downloading the zipped version from here.

You also may want to check out the Audacity FAQs.

If you cannot uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller, let me know and we'll try another method.

Aura, Quietman7: OP's computer may have a temporarily-corrupt explorer.exe, along with corrupted program/file associations. I doubt even Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) will help unless it can be downloaded and run under Safe Mode with Networking. Whatchathink? Awhile back, I was able to fix my Win7Pro's explorer.exe via SFwN/WR9AiO).

We don't have enough information to assume anything yet. Hence why I'm asking for a MiniToolBox log, to gather intel on the system.
