How can I remove this \\?\Volume backup that appears in Windows Disk Defragmenter.  The reason is that I recently installed a Maxtor OneTouch 4 mini hard drive.  And the back up is updating on both drives.

Type diskmgmt in the search box, then press Enter.

Enter the following command in an elevated command prompt:

vssadmin delete shadows /all

 vssadmin delete shadows /all

This will clean up all VSS snapshots.

Defect operating system may often accumulate hundreds of VSS snapshots that persist in the system and cause Windows to become un-responsive.

The reason I posted problem solved was when I ran "vssadmin delete shadows /all" in elevaded CMD prompt as you suggested, I saw 2 shadows removed.

After I restared my computer I opened Disk Defragmenter again and \\?\Volume is still there.  What else can I try?

thank you,

The disk manager shows the following.

The system reserve partition.

The C: drive.

The Maxtor drive.

This mysterious volume is not a mass storage drive.

I would just leave it be.

Glad the command works for you!

No worry.  The command had cleaned up the shadow snapshot that was messed with index in disk.  This shadow copy drive is always there for VSS and you could leave it.
