All have now been dealt with, as the problem was found to be due to a Windows Update (KB3022345) and sfc /scannow now gives a clean report. However, I note that several lines in the CBS Log end with "Invalid Item" or "Invalid Package". I find that of concern.

Could I perhaps be infected?

If you have antivirus program, you should scan your computer. But I don't think that your problem is malware related even if antivirus shows something.

Only a few PUPs found with AVG and Malwarebytes and I also found WUD registry was somehow missing or corrupted. Dealt with Fix 50202.

I'll see what happens if I do another sfc scan,

Sorry for not coming back, but in meanwhile had other troubles. To cut a story short, System Restore apparently was reset but faults prevailed. Further use ( full and safe) ended with warning that the C:\ folder could not be extracted. Google found Tech Cookbook and SFCFixit. The latesr sfc scan has no corruptions
