Hi all
Like everyone else I am also getting the Windows 10 icon to reserve
the new Windows 10, but my question is (this maybe dumb) If you do the free
upgrade how does it effect your office package and an other packages for that
matter?
Also I currently run my 8.1 without a MS account but does Windows 10 force you
to have a Windows account or can I remain as I am.

Sure there will be loads of questions like this so looking forward to the replies

Regards

Rozzer

Hello there,

The free Windows 10 upgrade will not have any effect on MS Office or any other packages installed in your system.

Hope this helps!

Hi rozzer :)

You can use the "Check your PC" option of the "Get Windows 10" app (the Windows 10 logo in the icon tray) to see if you have any devices (drivers) and programs that are incompatible with Windows 10. If you do, these will be shown and you'll have to either uninstall them (in case of a program) or see if you need to update the hardware components or the driver (in case of a device). I suggest you to run that test right before upgrading Windows 10 as well, just in case there was a change during the time you run it now and the day you'll upgrade and make sure that everything's still good. Also, for the upgrade process, I imagine that if you do it while being "offline", Microsoft won't force you to login via a Microsoft account, but if you do it while being "online", they might.

'Like everyone else I am also getting the Windows 10 icon to reserve the new Windows 10'  ---- not quiote everyone, I have not received the upgrade notification yet (KB 3035583). I have posted a query about this on the MS Community Forum. The Windows Upgrade Assistant is I think for W8 and earlier, not intended for W8.1, but I have used it to check out my W8.1 Tablet.  It reports that my machine and software are largely compatible (with a couple of reservations) but I have found that clicking on the 'Reserve your free upgrade' button does not work (for me).  So I have queried that aswell.  i wonder if anyone else has the same issue?

What version of Windows do you have? Also, did you manually check for updates by clicking on the "Check for updates" button?

My W8.1 Tablet now reports that KB3035583 is installed as an update (I think it may have downloaded earlier than I had assumed, as I did not find it in recent updates).  However, the expected W 10 notification has not appeared.  Is it possible I may have to activate it somehow?  If so, what is the procedure for doing that?  Hopefully when it is activated the 'reserve your free upgrade' button will work, as so far it does not.

Go in C:\Windows\System32\GWX and execute GWX.exe. The icon should appear in the icon tray after.

You will be able to login using a local account but you will be avoiding some of the feature of Windows 10.

Hi again

Thanks to all the contributors I have taken note of the info I need and will

login offline for a user account as suggested, I don't want the apps and

goodies that come with Windows...I need to pick my own apps and programmes

when and if necessary plus the fact I think it may be more private/secure form MS

(I could be wrong)

Thanks anyway all

Thank you Aura for the GWX link.  I have not yet got it to work.  I found the System 32 Folder which contains GWX files, but not one that is an exe file.  I took a chance and tried to run each one of them.  It does not seem to have had any effect ---- the upgrade icon has still not appeared in the tray.  There should have been a screen clip below but I got an error message saying I was not allowed to use that extension (I think it is .png? ) so I havel listed the items instead:

GWX                                        Application

GWXConfigManager               Application

GWX.dll                                   Application extension

GWXUX                                   Application

GWXWorkert                           Application
