I do not know where to begin; if it can happen it's happening.  As my name denotes, it's (mostly) my fault.  I had my computer built in January 2003, special order, installed spybot and other services, cannot remember them all, and most are deleted, except spybot which I am afraid to delete, as I think it has allot of my missing dll's etc. locked up inside it.  This came about by clicking ok, every time it wanted me to, and so the loss of functionality began, and eventually I just shut it off.  Anyway to get to the point; my computer is so bogged down with who knows what, that even opening task manager offline, with nothing else running, takes an eternity.  Now it's crash after crash, BSOD's, with every reason imaginable, just all around very unstable.  Now after a browser update, it continually crashes when I try to access settings.  Sometimes I can download copies of files to print, sometimes cannot, sometimes can scan, fax, etc., most times cannot.  After trying to System Restore, everything's a complete mess.  My browser is no longer secure, disconnect does not function, and cannot be replaced, or re-installed, on and on.  If I had to guess, I would say my system is riddled with missing, or corrupted dll's, pathway's etc., duplicate copies, not fully un-installed programs, in fact most of the time, I cannot even un-install anything from my computer without it resulting in a fatal error.  Please help.

I run XPSP3 Home, on a Gateway machine with the Aviator browser; I do not remember all the specs of my computer, and cannot find the page that came with it describing all the features. Simply put, if it was available in January 2003, my computer has it.  The only thing that is different is the hard drive, it was replaced a few years ago, due to an overheating issue, with a 300 Gb one.

Thanks in advance,

IMF

Let's start by finding out what's on your computer !  Please download and install 'Speccy' by Piriform a free download you can get here -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/speccy/

When you have it installed run it and when it has finished analysing it will provide a link to its report, please copy the link and paste it into your next post (and only the link !). these two images will show you how to get the URL -

Your Speccy report doesn't show anything out of the ordinary with your hardware and all your updates appear to be up to date. the only thing that jumps out is a slightly unusual usage pattern with your hard drive - it appears you keep the computer switched on for an average of nearly ten days at a time. Power on count = 233; power on time = 2225 days. All the SMART parameters for your hard drive show GOOD, but this is a fairly old hard drive, about 6.5 years, so I hope your back-ups are up to date.

XP will run reasonably with 512 MB of RAM but it wouldn't do any harm to see if you could find another 512MB stick since you have a free socket.

Next step - download and run 'Mini Toolbox by Farber'. another free download from BC -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

You can save it to your memory stick and run it from that. When it starts to run you will get a screen like this -

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8kc3xzpjw6jt1fo/MiniToolBox.jpg?dl=0

Unlike the example in the image, tick everything from 'List content of hosts' down to the bottom then click 'GO'. For your peace of mind, don't watch the screen as it runs !  I've just run it my computer and I think the error count went to something like 30,000. It turns out all the errors are connected with one application which didn't install properly and doesn't work and i know it doesn't work. I'll do something about the next time I need it.

When it finishes it will produce a text file on your desktop. Save this somewhere convenient and copy /paste the text into your next post. If there is too much text to fit into one post split it into two.

Hi Chris,

Tried to reinstall Avaitor last night (this morning), trying to get a clean install; no luck.  Then I realized I probably just screwed up the reports you had me pull.  I re-ran the reports prior to trying to reinstall Aviator, after resetting services to their default state, as the 'stisvc' error was prominent in the error log of last 10 events and does not show all the errors actually going on.  This is the new 'speccy' report.

Please ignore the 'lost lease' garbage, I forgot to pay my cable bill before leaving for the evening, and my service was interrupted briefly, and not restored until I got home ~0340hrs PDT.  Anyhow, under installed programs, why do so many say 'hidden'?  Is this why I cannot uninstall anything from my computer without a fatal error occuring?  The last time I had to reinstall windows OS, >10 years ago, from the original discs that came with my computer, was due to a virus detected running on a hidden location on my hd.

Post Statement:  No change after reinstalling Aviator, disconect is still broken, and I cannot update or remove & reinstall it as it is an integral part of Aviator security and will not let me do so.

Give me 24 hours or so to have a think about your Mini toolbox reports and do a little digging. I've got some unexpected free time tomorrow.

In the meantime, since I see you have Malwarebytes installed, run a scan with that and see if it throws up anything.

You have me a little confused about your anti-virus security. You have Avast Pro installed and it is running and set to update automatically. But you also refer to 'Aviator' as 'security'. All I could find out about Aviator is that it is a browser based on a now elderly version of Chrome and is considered outdated. Can you explain?

If Aviator is a security suite then you are going to have to decide which one - that or Avast - you want to keep since having two such products installed and running at the same time will cause conflicts and is very likely to slow your computer down.

Hi Chris,

Aviator is a secure browser from WhiteHatSecurity, an IT and security firm, (whitehatsec.com/aviator); it came about because they had to use the same 'commercial' browsers to do their work, banner ads and all, that we do.  So they developed a browser off of the same stable chromium code that Google used for Google Chrome, only stripping away all the tracking and spying crap, and by default opens in a 'protected' environment without having to dig to the very depths of Google Chrome settings to try and achieve something close to the same thing that Aviator provides off the bat.  Part of Aviator, bundled in, is the disconnect extension; simply put, no ads, or third party content is allowed to load, providing a clean webpage with no advertisements at all.  This significantly speeds up Aviator loading and web surfing, when I click Aviator it opens like a light switch is turned on, or at least it used to; but it is broken, and I can never completely uninstall and reinstall it, this is my problem.  I am never bothered by blinking banners for Viagra, or hemorrhoid cream simply because I read a medical article once that mentioned it.  Sites that are known to track and sell your information, and malvertisements are blocked by default, and a number of third party content is unreachable, even if you wanted to see it.  It is like when the net was new, and unregulated, way back in the olden days, yeah, I was there and remember.  They came under attack recently by Google who slammed them, and the browser, saying it is out of date and several updates behind Chrome.  Well guess what; it doesn't have to be up to date with Chrome, because it is NOT Chrome, all the crap that is out there to get you is not going to load, period.  Why would you need to patch for something that is never going to make it to your browser to begin with?  Besides, they do update Aviator, but Google has to bleep about something to try and get people to move away from Aviator and back to Chrome, so they can exploit and make money off of everyone again.  I mean why do you think that nearly every download offers Google Chrome, already checked and ready for installation?  And has to be unchecked before downloading something, to make sure it does not get installed on my system; but too late it is already there lurking in the background, one of the things I would like to get rid of.  Aviator has malware protection built in and enabled from the start, so you never have to worry or think about it again.  I am cringing at the moment not knowing, and not being able to block, those that are spying on, and tracking me to every site I go to, at this very moment; I have not been able to check my bank account balance for over a week now, too scared.  My whole problem is centered around not being able to clean out all the crap uninstalls, broken links, pathways, and corrupt or missing dlls on my system.  You can see in my reports, the number of times I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Aviator, but after using windows uninstaller to remove Aviator, for a proper reinstall, it never gets all of it out, so when I reinstall Aviator it gets jammed up with all this old junk, and duplicate files, and cannot install properly.  I have scrolled through my computer, and there are bits and pieces of Aviator here and there, that never got the uninstall message, and never were removed, causing all my problems with my browser.  This is what I need help with; a tool that will remove all the remnants and junk from incomplete installations clogging my computer, slowing it down, and a tool that will properly uninstall these programs.  I cannot uninstall almost anything without getting a fatal error, and the programs or applications, i.e. itunes, apple update etc., remain on my computer, only now are broken and more useless, and messes everything else up along the way.  There is no conflict between Aviator and Avast, Malwarebytes, or Defender.  I ran scans with MBAM, and a boot scan with Avast; all clean.  It is all the left over junk, remnants and improper/incomplete uninstalls causing my problems.

Thanks,

IMF

One of the best uninstallers around is the Revo uninstaller, available as a free download from BC -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/revo-uninstaller/

When it starts running it analyses the software on your computer and then lists it for you to uninstall as you wish. Read the 'Help' guide before you start using it and normally the default mode is sufficient. It is very good at getting rid of fragments left by normal uninstallers. I suggest you use it to completely uninstall 'Aviator' and then re-install it, as well as removing any other remnants of applications it finds.

Looking at your Mini toolbox report most of the errors reported revolve around 'Aviator' or rather its installation but one section does concern me and that is the listing under 'Hosts content'. All of the web-sites listed resolve to at best dubious web-sites - advertising, gambling and porn sites - and they should be cleared out. I think the simplest way to do this is to 'reset' or 'refresh' (as FireFox calls it) your browsers. You will find guidance on how to do it in FF here -

http://mzl.la/15sSfJR

and IE has a similar 'reset' facility. The other thing is to clear out cookies and temporary files. Use Ccleaner for this, obtainable here -

Have a look at this image and be warned, one part of Ccleaner is a registry cleaning tool. Do NOT use this, see this image -

Try the above and let me know how you get on and one small point about MTB that I obviously didn't make clear. Alongside the item 'List devices' select 'Only problems' as well. this saves working through what feels like hundreds of perfectly serviceable devices !

Hi Chris,

Thank you for looking over that incredibly long list; I am sorry, it was quite late and I was quite 'medicated' when I ran that tool box application again.  As for the hosts content, some of these sites (~340), are listed under 'internet properties>privacy tab,>per site privacy actions>managed sites', and are never allowed to use cookies regardless of their privacy policy; however, there is a 'default button' in this tab to set a standard privacy level, instead of using the custom settings and the list that was generated and now managed by my computer (sucking up resources?).  The second list, I quit counting after around ~1,500, and there are many, many, many more sites listed, is under the 'internet properties>security tab>restricted sites tab'.  I believe these fields were populated during my last OS installation by a tool I was using at the time; I do not remember the name of the tool, and have always wondered if these lists were there to help, or were just slowing things down.  The tool was advertised as a free tool, that identifies and removes thousands of errors and other 'bad things' from your computer; however, I have always suspected that they were implanted by that tool, because after it identified them, it would only remove 10-15, unless I paid them, and I could swear they were not there before I ran that tool.  Now, I feel like a 'tool' for not realizing that I should have removed them.  Thank you for the links, I cannot wait to rid my computer of these items.  My computer has been so slow, for so long now, I had just become accustomed to it; and I am constantly trying to tweak the settings to restore my computer to it's original state.  One thing is kinda weird, sometimes my computer is blazing fast, just like it was out of the box, after making these 'tweaks', but will quickly revert back to being so bogged down, and so slow that it is unbearable; now I know why.

Thank you so much,

IMF

P.s. Just to let you know, I do not gamble, and I am not a 'pedo'.  When I was counting these sites, I noticed that there are some pretty sickening websites listed; and I thought they were there so I would never end up at one of those sites by accident, live and learn I guess.

The hosts list is added by Spybot S&D to block known bad sites.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

OK, now I am confused, again; do I remove these hosts entries, or leave them in place?  As for the first list, the one that is running with custom settings, 'internet properties>privacy tab>per site privacy actions>managed sites', should I click the 'default' button and let the computer apply actions to set a standard privacy level, instead of using the custom settings and list, that was populated by another service, as I did not intentionally initiate this list's custom settings away from the 'default' setting, as well as deleting the content?  As for the second list, located under 'internet properties>security tab>restricted sites tab', where the thousands of other websites are located; should I delete this list if it was populated and used by Spybot S&D?  Especially since I no longer have Spybot running, and only used it as a 'stand alone scanner', and have not needed to use it for that purpose for years, since Avast! and MBAM came along.  In fact, I would have deleted Spybot altogether, but I believe allot of my system dlls, i.e. 'rainbow.ani', and the like, are locked up inside of it, and therefore I cannot delete it, I tried to years ago, but I would permanently lose those system settings that are locked up along with legitimate viruses detected, by clicking OK every time Spybot told me to.  Nowadays, I do not have to worry about accidentally ending up at a site, the like of which are contained in these lists, due to better A/V and Malware solutions, and common sense.  However, in the early days, I had to have something installed to keep my 'click happy' spouse from clicking a link on a page thinking it was some fantastic offer, or that we had won a cruise, or other prize, that was actually a malvertisment, which would infect our computer with browser redirects etc, and have to come home to a locked up/broken computer with graphic images on screen, that I am getting yelled at for.  So I installed the protection available at the time to keep the peace at home, because even though I was at work when this would happen, IT('S) would always end up being MY FAULT in the end, as you probably well know, you can never win an argument like this, or any other for that matter, when your spouse knows they are wrong, but will never, ever admit it.  So delete, or not to delete, that is the question.

Thank you,

IMF
