Hey everyone, first post here. It looks like my symptom is similar to that of the poster beneath me, but in the interest that each case is unique, I'm going to create this separately.

The symptom: My laptop starts up and immediately skyrockets to close to 100% RAM usage, dropping randomly from time to time; except for those short intervals, it is totally unusable (and those intervals are so short and infrequent that it's unusable anyways). I could not manage to get a screenshot, so attached is a photo I took with my phone (you will see on there that at that time I had attempted to start Firefox - the issues were occurring otherwise regardless). It appears the issue is being caused by svchost.exe using over 1,000,000K, though I imagine that is a symptom of something else.

Some background I think will help:

I am using a Lenovo T530 running Windows 7 64-bit with 4GB of RAM; the puppy is about 3 years old.

I had begun having issues a couple months ago where the WIFI would drop ("No Internet Connection") for no apparent reason (and others using the same WIFI had no issues). I also noticed what I took to be issues with the sound card - audio would occasionally freeze and scratch, on the speakers or any pair of headphones.

Drivers updates seemed to fix those. Shortly after, I started experiencing general severe slowness across the machine and my trackpad ceasing to work from time to time. I did disk clean ups, defragged; took my C drive from being 90% to now only about 50% full. I even opened up my Lenovo and did dust removal. All of these would seem to provide temporary relief, until the slowness and freezing would return (except the dust removal, I'm not sure that did anything).

tl;dr - getting here seemed to be a gradual process, and I can't think of any one download or point as an "inciting incident". I've done extensive scans with Avast, Malwarebytes, and TDSSKiller from Kaspersky - nothing. I don't know if the original WIFI and sound problems were related or still occur, because I can never use the laptop for a long enough period to test for their random occurrences.

Any help is much, much appreciated. I need this thing for my final year of college!

Try downloading and running Process Explorer.

Hover the mouse over the svchost that is using lots of ram and see what services are running under it.

Provide a screen shot (or picture) if possible.

Also download MiniToolbox, check the box for 'last 10 event viewer errors', click 'go' then paste the result with your reply.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Hi zcomputerwiz, here is the Process Explorer screenie, and the MiniToolbox results log. (I don't know why my cursor isn't shown, but it is hovering over the high-usage svchost.exe)

Hello Harrison;

At first glance @ your Speccy I see 3 glaring problems & one other potentially serious security problem:

1) You have 2 Anti-Virus progs installed & enabled; Avast & MSE. This is not only an excessive drain on system resources but also superfluous. Uninstall one or the other... for the record I prefer Avast Free over MSE but YMMV.

2) You have 2 memory slots but only 1 is being used: is there a reason for this? Consider installing more RAM, according to the Specs I found your Thinkpad supports up to 16gb... and it's relatively cheap these days

Memory slots
Total memory slots: 2
Used memory slots: 1
Free memory slots: 1

3) Your NVIDIA NVS 5400M is using 1gb of dedicated RAM out of your 4gb installed.

4) Your Java is out of date 8.40 installed - 8.45 is the latest. Either update it to the latest or better yet uninstall it if is unneeded, Java is a malware magnet with more holes in it than a porcupine's underwear.

HTH ;)

Hey Brooklyn, and thanks for the help.

1. I will go about uninstalling MSE - will the regular uninstall from Add/Remove programs be sufficient to clear it?

2. The 4GB RAM I have is what came w/ the computer. Though I've never opened that part of the computer before, I guess it is all stored on one 4GB stick. Questions related to this:

  • The svchost.exe seems to explode to infinity now, which is of course capped at whatever amount of RAM I have. Even if I were to increase that amount, say to 8GB, wouldn't it still explode to infinity, and just try and occupy the full 8GB?
  • If I increase it to 8GB, would it suffice to get one additional 4GB stick identical to the current 4GB stick? Or should I get the new one, as well as replace the old one?
  • Does RAM go bad? In the early days of having this laptop, I would play some intensive video games that were certainly more straining than things I do now-a-days, and never had issues. Even in the past year I've used some intensive sound editing software accessing massive sound libraries. Now-a-days, the issues begin right on startup.

3. I'm assuming this is not good - is there a way around this (ie, only have the video card use that RAM when necessary)?

4. I am going to opt to update.

Please excuse any terms / phrases that are reflective of my semi-illiteracy in these matters.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior.

Credit for this information goes to quietman7.

===========

Your Java being outdated presents a security issue which has been  documented through the industry.  If you are going to run Java, you need to keep it current.  When it is outdated like yours is it becomes problematic.  Another program which should be kept current is Adobe, especially the Reader.

==========

One of the big slowness problems with OEM computers is bloatware.  Programs and applications that are essential to running the computer.  Some of this can be easily uninstalled and will improve the performance.  My wife's laptop was fairly quick when she first got it, but she keeps adding games to it till it now is comparatively slow.  You should read this article.

As always, the quickest way to add speed to a computer is to add more RAM. RAM doesn't go bad, it can be damaged, killed, or can have a failure.  It is very susceptible to electrostatic shock, this is why precautions should be taken when handling these modules.

=========

Most dedicated graphics cards have their own memory to help it out.  But you have a integrated graphics chip which you are limited to as you don't have a PSU to run a dedicated card, nor the PCI-E expansion slot needed to plug a card of this type in.

==========

Please run the MiniToolBox one more time with a check in the List Installed Programs box.

==========

You have a huge number in the Reallocated Sector Count.  The other specs look good, but I'm concerned about that number.  For that reason I would like you to run a diagnostic scan on your hdd.

Please download and run SeatTool for Windows.

When the website opens scroll down till you find the I Accept button and click on it.

If you scroll down below this button you will find instruction for installing this.

Once you install this program you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for hdds on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB port.

2.  Detected Drives will list the hdd/s found.  Place a check mark in the drive you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  When the scan is complete you will see Test results, post the status.  If it is green it has passed the scan.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

==========

Please run AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner and install it.

When AdwCleaner opens you will see an image like the one below.

adwcleaner11_zps48314883.png

Click on Scan to start the scan.

Once the search is complete a list of the pending items will be displayed.  If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.

Click on Clean to remove the selected items.  If you have any questions about any items in the list please copy and paste the list in your topic so we can review it.

You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be closed so that the infections can be removed.  Click on OK.  The computer will be restarted to complete the cleaning process.

When the cleaning process is complete a log of what was removed will be presented.  Please copy and the paste this log in your topic.

Hey Brooklyn, and thanks for the help.

....

You're welcome! Please follow the instructions posted by dc3 in reply #8, he is much more experienced & proficient than I in diagnosing & repairing these types of problems, I'd even go out on a limb to say he's among the best here @BC...I'm actually quite happy he listed the same problems as I... you're in good hands with dc3!

I'll keep watching from "the sidelines" & good luck!

Thanks for all the information. I'll be sure not to have multiple anti-viruses going forwards; that being said, I've only had Avast for about a week or so (I installed it to do the recommended scan, once the problems had already begun).

As I purchase additional RAM, would you recommend going for the 8GB or the 16GB?

First is the MiniToolBox Log, which I ran prior to ADWCleaner and Seagate. Attached is a screenie of the Seagate result (Pass), and then last is the ADWCleaner Log.

 (I can't seem to find the button I use to attach an image? The image I want to attach simply shows green that I "passed" the Seagate scan.)

When you purchase RAM you should use matched modules so they can be run in dual channel.  Since you already have the one 4GB module I would suggest purchasing another of the same.  You will find this module on Amazon for $39.99 with free shipping.  This will give you 8GB of RAM, this will make a noticeable difference in the computer speed and performance.  You have not indicated what part of the world you are from, but you may need to do a google for this module from home.  This is the module  M471B5273DH0-CK0, this is what you have installed.  You want that exact module.

Everything else looks good.  I would add the RAM and see if this resolves your issue.

I have been trying to find a video that shows the steps needed to add a second module.  It seems that your laptop will take two modules, but one of the slots is under the keyboard.  I found a manual which should help with this, you can find it here.  There is a fair amount of disassembley necessary.

If the link I posted above isn't enough, use this link https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t530_t530i_w530_hmm_en_0b48474_03.pdf and start looking from page 72.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Hey dc3 and thanks for the help; I've just ordered the recommended RAM off of Amazon, which should be here Tuesday (I'm in the Midwest). I'll respond back once I've been able to test out the laptop with it.

SPECCY tells me that your harddrive is failing. SMART attribute #C4 is WAY too high.

Hey Willy - can you or somebody (dc3?) explain that a little more in-depth? Thanks.
