Major shut-down problems.

My Compaq Presario CQ71 has been hanging up at shutdown and there have been occasions when I've had to start in Safe Mode and use System Restore to get back on track.

 

My first source for help was the HP Update Help Centre and I installed an updated BIOS but it's happened again and I lost internet connection, Windows Security and System Restore. I sorted it using system restore via system recovery at the Esc phase of powering up.

 

I now wonder if I might have some virus or nasty. Malwarebytes has given a clean bill of health so I've been advised to come to you.

 

Can you help me please? Thanks

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Please run System File Checker
 
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
 
In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.
 
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.
 
This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, it will look similar to the image below.

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.
 
If the scan finds no integrity  problems the scan will stop.  Type in exit, then press Enter to stop the scan.
 
When the scan is finished please do the following.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png then copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box.
 
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
 
This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Double click on this icon to  
the CBS log, copy and paste the log in your topic.
 
This log may be very large, if you have problems posting it try breaking it into smaller parts.  When you copy these parts you will highlight the section you are going to copy.  If you leave that section highlighted it will give you a quick reference for where you left off.

sorry hamluis - I hadn't realised that dc3's request was complementary'

 

I ran sfc /scannow - the final screen says***:

"Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

 

C:\Windows\system32>"

 

*** I saved a snip but can't find the URL to post it.

 

I then entered findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt but there's no

sfcdetails icon on my desktop.

 

I then went to the Logs\CBS folder - there's a CBS Text Document there but it says "Access is Denied". I went into Properties and changed the security to full control but still can't open it. [I've reset the settings back to what they were.]

I then used the "Attach Files", found the file but when I hit Open to attach it, there was another message:

"CBS. You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission."

 

I see from other threads that others have had a similar authority problem but were able to attach the file - I can't so can you help me again please?

Just found on another thread that I should copy & paste it to desktop. I did that but still can't open it - this time Notepad is not responding.

 

Nor can I attach it as it's 226MB. What should I do next?

 

I also tried converting it to a .txt file using a command in yet another thread but that hasn't posted a file on my desktop.

For the CBS log do the following.

 

In the Start menu click on Computer.  
 
If you have more that one partition or hdd click on the C: drive, then Windows, then Logs, then CBS.
 
Your CBS log will have the date and time that the log was created.  Double click on the file, a text file will appear, double click on that.
 
A window will open titled Select a Destination, click on Desktop, then click on Make New Folder, then name the folder, then click on Extract.
 
You should now have an icon on your desktop with the name you gave it.  Open it, copy it and paste it in your topic.

hello dc3. I'm still getting the 'access denied' message. I've copied it onto desktop and my gut feeling is that the 'Notepad not responding' is simply because of the size of the file. I'll wait longer and then use your advice about copying it in bits. Thanks

At last, I've been able to open the notepad  but it's now a big problem trying to copy and paste it here. I keep getting  'message too long' and so presumably need to send it bit by bit. To do that I need to establish the maximum message length of posts and then work out how many lines of data that is. I can't even upload the file - it's way to big even if I zipped it.

 

It's 00:15 here in the UK - I've spent hours on this and my concentration is wavering. With your permission, I'll start afresh in the morning.

 

Thanks again - much appreciated. I think I need a stiff drink now.

 

EDIT: I've just realised that the file is 226MB so I'd have to send 27 posts of 10MB. Is that right? or am I overlooking the obvious?

Try Wordpad, that should read the large file.

Thanks RolandJS. I've finally opened Notepad and can view the file but at 226MB I'm waiting for assistance on how to get it here. Most other CBS logs posted in this forum seem to average around 3MB - I've no idea why mine is 75 times bigger! But at least my brain is working normally after some sleep!

Do you have Onenote?

 

If you do, you can post the log in it.  Or you can post it in Dropbox.
