  • Double click on the FRST icon and allow it to run.

To see whats going on with your internet connection lets first run the following tool.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center

Thank you for the additional information. :)

You mentioned you had tried to resolve the issue with the software licensing service. Can you please try the following:

Make sure that Slsvc.exe is running before you start the update. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start and type Services or services.msc in the search box and then click on Services under Programs section of the search results on top pane.

2. If User Account Control asks your permission to continue, click Continue. If UAC asks for administrator’s password, enter a valid password.

3. Scroll down the list to the service Software Licensing and double-click it.

4. In the properties window of the Software Licensing service, set Startup type to Automatic.

5. Click Start to start the service. If the status is already running, click the Stop button and confirm with Yes to stop the service. Restart the service by clicking the Start button.

6. Click OK to exit the Software Licensing’s Properties window and close the Services window.

If that does not work, Microsoft has released a new "Fix it"solution that should automatically solve your problems with Windows Update. Just click the link below and follow the instructions.

Yes, you can just continue, the service isn't present on your computer, so windows doesn't understand what you want to stop (it would be the same if I had you manually search for the service and you couldn't find it :)).

I ran into more problems in renaming software distribution I got access denied , and I did run cmd as administrator. Also when I tried to rename the catroot I got a duplicate file name exist so I changed it to catroot.bak2 next problem when I tried to register mshtml.dll it loaded but it says entry point not found it says make sure it is a valid DLL and try again. msxml also had a problem. I'd say at least one third of the .dll had a problem but I went ahead and finished the procedure any way then rebooted and tried a update. I got the same error message.

Just to clarify, except for the update problem, do you have any other problem with your computer?

yes I have limited internet access for example I have to use a different computer to communicate with you the browser on the affected computer won't reliably go to your web page. also after doing the repair install of the operating system it now shows not activated and will not allow me to enter the software key. I get the same error code when I try.

Do you have the possibility to connect your computer to the internet via an ethernet cable?
