Hello,

This morning I ran adwcleaner to remove some annoying pop up PUP that was making this sort of thing happen:

A cockroach is a bug that can survive a nuclear explosion.

I had previously run three other programs (in order):

-Avast Antivirus (0 PUM and PUP)

-Antimalware Bytes (3 PUM and 19 PUPs (including a backdoor, a Trojan, and a proxy hijacker or something of that ilk)

-SpyBot S&D (0 PUM 0 PUP 0 Adware)

AdwCleaner found a single program called "Privoxy Service" which I cleaned.

The underlined and differently colored word would have a small arrow and if you mouse-over it, it would pop up an advertisement. Additionally, it would occasionally hijack my browsers opening an additional page with an (I'm guessing false) support website with a number to call. It was claiming to be run by some "ad-something". At first I thought these were usual pop ups until I noticed that they were happening on every page both on chrome and on internet explorer.

I am using the Windows 8.1 OS with Internet Explorer (and Google Chrome, but not at the moment as you will see in the next paragraph).

After running AdwCleaner it prompted me to reboot. Actually, it rather forced me to reboot.

After rebooting, two things happened.

Firstly, it rebooted to my lock screen. After clicking on my lock screen to enter my password screen, it instead showed me a blue screen telling me that something had gone wrong and that they were collecting data to figure out possible fixes after which it rebooted again, this time successfully.

Secondly, after successfully entering the password, I got back into my desktop and clicked the Google Chrome shortcut. I received a windows error message saying that it could not find the file Google Chrome and would I like to delete the shortcut? I deleted the shortcut. Then, I tried opening the actual executable for Google Chrome. It repeated the same windows error message and prompted me to delete the executable in the start menu. The original file still appeared in the list of installed programs. It allowed me to uninstall it. I then went into IE and to the Google Chrome official website to reinstall chrome. It attempted to run the Chrome Installer and popped up an error message saying that there was an error initializing the Chrome Installer and it couldn't install. I tried this several more times and didn't have success any of those times either.

I'm at a loss. It worked perfectly fine before. I had removed chrome once previously to no ill effect. I wonder, at this point, if I still have some sort of MUP/PUP on my system or if it is just a weird bug with chrome that is preventing me from reinstalling it again.

Any help here would be a cool drink of water on a warm sunny day.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it. What you have listed is the standard operating procedure I ordinarily utilize when something fishy happens with my computer. I am running a few of the above programs and then again. I have two issues with the request:

1) I do not wish to openly display my IP or addy settings as I believe I got hacked and I do not want to make it easier to get into my systems (Reason: I found a Backdoor PUM in my system when I was initially scanning)

2) I would also prefer not to list all of the programs I'm using. I would prefer not to disclose the reason for this, suffice to say, it is indeed a good reason.

For these reasons I will run the other programs and post logs shortly. I appreciate your understanding and will omit the MiniToolbox. I'm pretty sure this is just a result of leftovers. I am also running Trend Micro House Call as one of my removable media devices seems to have spread infection. RKill displayed no malicious processes when run before everything. I will re run everything without RKill on reboot.

I ran out of time to finish running scans for today but I will resume scanning and continue posting logs as soon as I am able.

My guess is that AdwCleaner removed the wrong proxy file (i.e.  Privoxy was removed instead of  PUM.Bad.Proxy, HKU\S-1-5-21-154441740-129202785-3889643849-1002\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS|ProxyServer). If this is the case if there is a way to restore privoxy, it may possibly remedy the problem I seem to be having with chrome since it looks like my computer is now clean.

I still need Security Check log.

As for MiniToolbox skip installed programs list, remove your IP from the log and post the rest.

Then....

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

p22002970.gif Download Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the icon and select Run
  • Click Next
  • Select I accept the terms in this license agreement, then click Next twice
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish to launch the program
  • Once the virus database has been updated click Start Scanning
  • If any threats are found click Details, then View log file... (bottom left hand corner)
  • Copy and paste the results in your reply
  • Close the Notepad document, close the Threat Details screen, then click Start cleanup
  • Click Exit to close the program

I attempted to run Security Check from both links and neither of them would load on IE.

I am wary of running AdwCleaner for a second time because cleaning files was what led to Chrome dying. I do not want to risk damaging my laptop further.

Here is the minitoolbox log (I omitted my ip info by deleting it or using *s)
