I recently got this laptop, so it is still new and so is the installation.

The laptop is TOSHIBA SATELLITE C55D-A-149. I realise that this is a budget laptop and the processor is fairly weak. But it came pre-installed with Windows 8.1 and its depressingly slow, I mean everything takes forever, my 10 year old centrino laptop performs better. Usually clicking a link in the browser will hang up the laptop for a few seconds because it needs time to process the single click.

Startup is slow, file manager is slow, minimizing a window takes forever and so on.

In order to find out where the problem lies I ran a cross platform benchmark on my machine i.e. on Windows and on Ubuntu linux. I used a live CD to run linux without installing it. The benchmark tool used was Geekbench3: http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/

The results of the benchmark can be seen from here: http://browser.primatelabs.com/user/87755

And it is clear how lagging Windows 8.1 is.

What is the reason for this very poor performance?

If Windows 8.1 really is the problem would it be better for me to remove this and install Windows 7? But I dont want to lose my genuine copy of 8.1 as this is what ensures the next free Windows 10 upgrade. Is there any way to partition the hard drive and not lose the recovery partition?

What are my options now 16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I think it's your processor. It's only 1 GHz. I don't know if you can change laptop processor to a better one (over 2 GHz).

To be honest, I don't know what is currently the average GHz of laptop processor but imo, below 2 GHz seems to be slow.

Hi The Punisher :)

Can you post a Speccy snapshot of your laptop so we can see it's specs?

ik5xYHs.pngSpeccy - Publish a snapshot
Follow the instructions below to download and install Speccy, then to publish a snapshot of your system information:
  • Download and install Speccy from Piriform (the download will start automatically a few seconds after clicking on the Speccy link);
    Note: You can opt-out the Google Toolbar installation if you want;
  • Once Speccy is installed, launch the program and give it a good minute to load all your system information;
  • After that, click on the File menu in the top left corner, and select Publish Snapshot;
  • A window will appear asking you to confirm your decision to publish a snapshot. Click on Yes;
  • A new window will appear after, with a URL link to your snapshot. Click on Copy to Clipboard button to copy that URL to your clipboard, then paste it in your next reply and post it;

The specs aren't that bad, that laptop should still run with a certain ease. Follow the instructions below please.

3Al62Pm.pngMiniToolBox
  • Download MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;
  • Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:
    • List Installed Programs;
    • List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;
    • List Devices - Only Problems;
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size;
      wNeKMCX.png
  • Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;
  • Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

You have 6GB of RAM and a CPU running at 3.6GHz.  That should be a quick computer.  But... then there is all the bloatware Toshiba loads on it, this will slow the comuter.

If you are interested, you can read about the bloatware loaded on this computer here.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

You have 6GB of RAM and a CPU running at 3.6GHz.  That should be a quick computer.  But... then there is all the bloatware Toshiba loads on it, this will slow the comuter.

If you are interested, you can read about the bloatware loaded on this computer here.

Thanks for the reply. I believe you must be mistaken my processor cannot run at 3.6 GHz, its maximum speed is 1 GHz. Although I do agree that the bloatware may be playing a part here.

The CPU is really at 1GHz, that's your issue. You won't be able to do much without a new CPU to be honest. Of course, 1GHz is the minimum recommended to run Windows 8.1, but it doesn't meant that it'll run it smootly. I'm sorry OP but I would return the laptop if I were you and get another one. It's not one that is worth buying nor using.

Thats what I thought, the CPU really is the bottleneck. Not a wise decision by Toshiba there to use this processor for laptops.

Thanks for your time, Aura. I appreciate it :)
