I noticed my computer no longer automatically opens windows explorer when I plug in a removable drive like it used to.  When I clicked on the search in Windows 8 and put in autoplay, clicked on the autoplay settings from there it says there's no program associated with this and won't open.  However, if I go to control panel, it allows me to change autoplay settings, only they don't seem to actually be working.

Anyone know why this is happening and what I can do?

None of the usual steps help.  It is a complete mystery why this doesn't work.   By the way, I'm running Windows 8.1, not Windows 7.  Holding down the shift key while plugging in a device does not open autoplay either.

Lot's more to try.  Give me some time to research it (I'm also researching context menu issues of my own).

I'll post back with something no later than tomorrow AM.

Try these:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/30527-autoplay-enable-disable-remembering-user-choices.html

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/30511-autoplay-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

I suggest using the .reg files as it seems that the dialogs aren't working for you (?could be a virus problem?)

Also, at the bottom of the page are related tutorials that might help.

Thanks for trying to help.  My computer has autoplay settings how I want them when I go to the control panel.  It just isn't abiding by any of them anymore.  Nothing happens anymore like it used to when I plug in removeable usb drives.

I don't know if this is related, but if I go to the autoplay from searching on the "charms" bar or whatever it's called on the right side of my screen, it will say there is no program associated with that task and won't let me open autoplay settings from there, but if I go to the traditional desktop explorer control panel, I can change autoplay settings and all that--it just doesn't seem to do any good anymore.

There are multiple places where these settings are controlled.
That's why I suggested using the .reg programs - to ensure that the registry is set appropriately (as the GUI may not properly reflect the registry).

If none of that works, then I'd suggest DISM/SFC according to these instructions:

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt).  Press Enter after each one:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

And, if that doesn't work, then try a Refresh

To refresh your system, go to Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery. Then under "Refresh your PC without affecting your files," click the Get started button.

Thanks, I tried the registry settings, and that did not fix the problem.  Then I tried the command prompt lines,  the first two said the component store is repairable.  Then when I did the 3rd prompt, it concluded with an error  0x800f0906  the source file could not be downloaded.

Did you try the SFC.EXE /SCANNOW?

If so, then try the last DISM command again.

If it doesn't work, the next step would be a Refresh

To refresh your Windows 8.x system, go to Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery. Then under "Refresh your PC without affecting your files," click the Get started button.

It still has the same error about the source files could not be downloaded.

Thank you for your help.  I hesitate to do a system refresh however at this point for fear of what I may lose with my installed programs and such.  Especially since I have upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 and don't have any recovery medium for 8.1

Losing the installed programs may be an issue - but the update from 8 to 8.1 is free.

So as long as you can recover to 8, you can update to 8.1 for free.

I would attempt the Refresh as you can always contact the seller of the program for a replacement installer (as long as you have the product ID's or other proof that you purchased the program).

The next thing to try would be a Reset - and you'd not only lose your programs, but you'd lose your data also.

Good luck!
